The Devon region

There is so much on offer for anyone looking to take a holiday in Devon. It is truly a beautiful and diverse county with sweeping moorland, wooded valleys to dramatic coastline, long sandy beaches, hidden inlets and traditional seaside towns and villages. Famous for its traditionally mild climate although 2010 saw snowfall in areas that exceed the Alps. The county is also proud of its locally grown produce where green lush fields and crystal clear seas produce some of the very best food the UK has to offer.

For those who enjoy home cooking most of this is available through farmers markets and local village shops. For those who would rather leave it to the professionals, you will be tempted by an outstanding variety of fantastic restaurants from fine dining through a traditional Devon cream tea! So my advise is come and experience the lure of this glorious county - the scenery is spectacular and the food mouth-watering, delicious and if you are lucky the sun will shine and you will indeed have found the holiday of your dreams!

Tavistock, a former stannary town lies to the west of Dartmoor. The town has a thriving market scene with a farmer’s market held on the town square twice and month and a covered pannier market held five days a week. There is a diverse and interesting range of shops and an excellent choice of pubs, bistros and restaurants. For those who enjoy the countryside this is the perfect destination.

Excellent walking can be found on Dartmoor, characterized by its distinctive granite tors. The landscape is diverse and beautiful from the barren remoteness of the moorland to lush countryside and deep wooded valleys.

"What a lovely place to spend Christmas"

Just returned from a week at the Old Shippon in Lamerton. The welcome we got from the owner was lovely and the welcome pack of goodies amazing. The Old Shippon is a converted Cow Shed with sleeping accommodation on the gound floor with living space upstairs. As we were three sets of adults, the three bedrooms - two with en-suites and one family bathroom was perfect. Bedrooms were beautifully but simply furnished with good quality linen and lovely big fluffy towels. There was also a utiility room with washing machine and freezer on the ground floor. Upstairs was one openplan room with lovely modern kitchen, dining area and comfortable lounge area with TV/DVD. It was lovely and warm - very efficient heating. The owners had decorated the living area for Christmas and there was a selection of games and well stocked bookcase both of which we took full advantage of. There is an enclosed garden which we didn't use due to the time of year but I imagine it would be lovely to sit and eat out there in the summer taking in the views. The village of Lamerton is very pretty and has a great pub which is within walking distance (approx one mile) and serves good food. Tavistock is a short drive away with lots of restaurants, cafes etc, a good market and selection of shops. There is a nice walk along the river Tavy. Calstock - approximately 10 miles away made for a lovely Christmas day walk along the river. As it was Christmas and an opportunity for our family to all be together, we didn't do very much but there looks to be lots to do for all ages.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to review The Old Shippon. On behalf of the owners of the property and Devonshire Cottage Holidays we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and hope that we will see you again in the future.
