The Algarve region
The Eastern Algarve region is a beautiful unspoilt part of Portugal boasting miles of sandy beaches which never seem crowded. They are EC Blue Flag rated for cleanliness and the Portuguese proudly maintain them on a regular basis.
The weather in the Algarve region is consistently mild in winter and nearly always sunny in the summer months. At its peak the temperature can reach up to 40 degrees centigrade. The humidity is usually quite low making conditions very pleasant indeed.
Touring the region by road is highly recommended. The level of traffic is at a low level that has to be seen to be believed.
Mention is required of the Portuguese people. They will welcome you at all times. English is spoken throughout most of the Algarve area, and nothing is too much trouble for them. If ever you need help then they will try their utmost to oblige.
Tavira area
Tavira is the oldest known town in Portugal dating back around 2000 years to Roman times. It is extremely picturesque consisting of narrow cobbled streets, restaurants, pavement cafes, riverside gardens, many beautiful churches and a restored Roman bridge over the river Gilao. There is a daily fruit, vegetable and fish market, many shops and several substantial supermarkets on the outskirts of town. A newly constructed supermarket is now open approx. 1/4 mile from our apartment.
Golfers are well catered for with Benamor, Quinta da Ria and Quinta da Cima par 72 18 hole courses as examples.

Within a 20 minute drive along the N125 road towards Spain are several delightful small villages situated on the coast. There are access roads leading to totally unspoiled beach areas.
The N125 will take you through Monte Gordo and Vila Real over the new bridge into Spain. Just over the border (unrestricted access - no check points) lies Ayamonte. There is a large Saturday market in the town - highly recommended.
In a westerly direction lies Faro and the Western Algarve. Faro has much to offer including superb shopping facilities. The rest of the area is equally impressive with every conceivable attraction to compliment your holiday.
How to get there
- Cheap flights available from Gatwick, Heathrow, Stanstead, Luton, E.Midlands, Bristol, via Monarch, Easyjet, British Airways, Ryanair (from Dublin) to Faro airport.
Ryan Air offer cheap flights from Stansted to Seville in Spain(Approx. 1.1/2hr. drive).
- Car Hire available from Europcar, Avis, Hertz and local companies situated in the airport.
All above is easily booked in advance via the Internet.
Journey time from Faro airport to Tavira apartment is approx. 45 mins by car or taxi.
Our apartment is situated on a side road off of the main N.125. This is easily accessed from junction 16 of the A.22. autostrada (toll free motorway).
Rail access from Lisbon via Tavira local station (approx. 15 mins. drive away).
