The Algarve / East Algarve region
With its stunning coastline, excellent golf courses and pleasant year round climate, the Algarve's 200 km stretch of beach has become one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations.
There is a clear definition between the Western Algarve and the East. Whilst the west shows more development, the eastern Algarve and its tidal marshlands still have a tranquil beauty, and the small resorts along the coast have retained much of the old character, looking today as they must have looked long ago.
Here, tourism blends in perfectly with local activities, creating a relaxed atmosphere, a tinge of excitement and even romance on the ferry boat trips to the beach islands, where visitors are rewarded with long white sandy beaches and warm waters.
The sea water temperature is around 14c in January and reaches a high of 22c in August. A pleasant sea breeze refreshes you. The temperature in the Algarve is around 15c in January and can go up to 28c or more in July and August. September, October and November are lovely months to visit also as the temperatures are around 20c. January is their coldest month, with a chance of some rain.
Tavira area
TAVIRA
Tavira, once known as the capital of the Algarve, stands proud amongst Portuguese history books and you will not fail to enjoy it's unspoilt charm, character and tranquillity. A Roman bridge links the 2 parts of the town across the River Gilao, its sides are decorated with traditional old bars, restaurants to visit. There are many churches (37 in total) to view along with the town castle, several monuments and the typical fisherman's harbour along the Fiver Formosa Natural Park. There is a wonderful daily market selling fresh home grown produce and a wide selection of vegetables in season. Horse drawn carriages and a small train operate around the town and are perfect for seeing all the sights and experience the peaceful ambience.
TAVIRA ISLAND
The Algarve is famous for its wonderful sandy beaches and the Island of Tavira is no exception. As a natural island separated from the mainland by the River Formosa, it is reached by catching a ferry from a designated point in the harbour. An excellent range of restaurants including beach bars, fish restaurants, Portuguese cuisine, pizza restaurant to name but a few. Also for hire are sunbeds, parasols and plenty of sports activities are also available. All these ingredients give a wonderful tropical holiday atmosphere amongst white sandy beaches and the rolling mountains in the distance. There are also a number of beautiful beaches that we can recommend.
OTHER THINGS TO SEE AND DO
Tavira itself is primarily a town for sight-seeing, dining and relaxing, however, by travelling a little further afield there are a number of things to do to suit all tastes. For nature lovers there are forest walks, cruises along the River Guadiana or nature trails along the Reserve where bird watching is in abundance. By travelling towards the west there are some excellent shopping centres as well as the famous water parks and zoo marine (wonderful for children), all easily reached by car (around 40 mins). From this property it is easy to take a day trip to Spain, the Spanish border town of Ayamonte is a mere 10kms away where the delights of another country can be sampled, this can be reached by bus, train, ferry or car. The vibrant city of Seville is under two hours away.
GOLF
This is the perfect accommodation for golfers wishing to sample the excellent courses situated in the Eastern Algarve radius, there are 6 courses to choose from. Benamor and the 2 quintas (Ria and Cima) are the most popular and can be reached within several minutes.
The prestigious new course of Monte Rei, designed by Jack Nicklaus now has its first 18 holes open and is continuing with its second phase, offering the height of golfing luxury. Although a little more expensive, this is a real treat for golfing fanatics wishing to experience some of the high life. Travelling only 10kms further towards Spain, the challenging course of Castro Marim comes highly recommended. Just across the border are the Costa Esuri and Quinta do Vale courses are growing in popularity.
How to get there

Guestbook for Terracos de Tavira (Townhouse)
We found it a perfect distance from the airport and we were delighted with the house when we saw it. Exactly what we saw in the pictures and much more. The house is very comfortable with lots of natural light and beautifully decorated. The restuarants were extremely good value for money, and because we are older, we used a lovely taxi man, who picked us up and brought us home every night at a very cheap rate. Tavira is beautiful, just what we were looking for. Thanks Pat & Nancy
I really enjoyed my stay in your lovely house. It was so close to all the amenities and I found the steps no bother at all, good excerise for me. It was my first time in Tavira and I will definitely be back as I just loved the old unspoilt character and relaxing feel to the town. I also couldn't believe how good and cheap the restuarants were. Thanks again, Sue
Just a quick note to let you know how much we enjoyed our holiday in your townhouse in Tavira. The house was perfect, literally 5 steps to the pool and the roof terrace with the great views over the town and out to the hills. Lorraine was great in meeting us and waiting for us to get packed up at the end of our holiday.
We would love to come back as Tavira is really a wonderful little town, the walk down into town from the steps at the front door allowed 'the driver' to leave the car at home and have a few glasses of vino with diner at the restaurants in town.
We hope you enjoy your break as much as we did ours; we may be back in touch for next year.
Gary & Michelle Sinclaire
