The Algarve / East Algarve region
Situated on the extreme South of Portugal, this part of the territory was the last to be conquered from the Moors by King Alfonso III at Faro in 1272. Traces of the Moorish presence are still seen in its unique architecture, the terraces, chimneys and whitewashed houses.
Getting there and getting around has greatly improved in the last few years. Faro Airport is served by numerous low-cost carriers and road journey times have slashed since completion of the Lisbon-Algarve highway and the A22, which runs from West to East along the width of the Algarve and on into Spain.
The climate is ideal for golf and other sports. In the northern part of the Algarve, the hills of Espinhação de Cão, Monchique and Caldeirão shelter the coast from strong winds. This brightly coloured region, with its fig trees, orange groves and almond trees in blossom, is also the most verdant and fertile. The southern coastline consists of a long stretch of fabulous sandy beaches, broken up by extraordinary rugged cliffs and fantastic grottoes.
Tavira / Pegada area
Tavira is called 'the prettiest town' in Portugal by the Portuguese. Located 25kms from Faro and 20kms from Spain, it is a firm favourite for discerning visitors. Tavira is an ancient town with a Phoenician, Roman and Moorish past. It has a castle, over 35 churches and a superb seven arch Roman bridge.
On both sides of the River Gilão you can find good shopping with local produce, including fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, basket ware, pottery, ceramic tiles, wrought iron work, and cork and shell handicrafts. Friendly locals welcome you, important whether you are just browsing or wining and dining in the many bars and restaurants, on the river front or in the fascinating cobbled side streets.
A short ferry trip takes you to the Ilha de Tavira and one of the best beaches along the entire coast. Clean, safe bathing, protected by the offshore sandbars and complimented by a number of cafes and bars. The 7kms of soft sand easily accommodates all the sunbathers, swimmers, windsurfers and sailors, even in peak season.
The scenic location of Tavira, protected by its natural lagoon, offers tranquillity and the opportunity to observe nature and bird life at its best. With a car, there is much to see in the surrounding area and the Tourist Office, below the Castle just off the main square will be a good place to start. Within a few kms are some of the best golfing facilities in the Algarve, good eating in the nearby fishing village of Cabanas and the Saturday market in nearby Olhão. To the East, Cacela Velha offers spectacular views over the Ria Formosa and further afield, take a day trip across the Spanish border into Andulusia and to the historic city of Seville.
At night, a treat awaits you back in Tavira. The town is transformed, with its illuminated white buildings and Moorish rooftops providing an attractive backdrop to the variety of restaurants and bars with their tempting Portuguese menus.
How to get there
Faro Airport (32 km) is only 30 minutes away by car. It is a major destination for Easyjet, which during 2008 operates flights from Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, East Midlands, Liverpool, Belfast, Newcastle, and Bristol. Other UK/Irish airports served include Birmingham, Coventry, Exeter, Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cork and Dublin.
There are numerous car-hire companies based at Faro Airport, including Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget, Sixt etc., as well as several Portuguese firms. Most of the larger firms operate a shuttle bus to and from an off-airport site but we recommend a local company, Golf Autos, who will meet you in Arrivals. You then pick up and return your car from a car park just in front of the Terminal building. They can be contacted on the internet at www.agarverent-a-car or by phone at +351 289 395 316. Speak to Alexandre Santos and mention the owner's name - Roger Price in Tavira
Otherwise, a taxi from Faro Airport to the villa will cost approximately 45 euros.

Guestbook for Varandas do Mar
From ST, April 2008
"La casa es ideal para pasar unas vacaciones relajadas ya que está muy bien equipada, en una zona muy tranquila y no se escucha un ruido en todo el día. Dispone de varias terrazas a ambos lados de la casa, todas ellas con mesa y sillas e incluso la piscina tiene un equipamiento completo. Tiene un buen acceso, se encuentra en una urbanización a sólo diez minutos andando del centro de Tavira, aunque hay que andar un tramo por una carretera nacional con bastante tráfico."
From DJ, July 2008
"The description of the property was spot on. The property was clean and well maintained, although having said that it is a new villa. The pool maintainance was very good, the pool was regularly checked and any problems sorted out straight away. The managers of the property were very good and were there if there was a problem. The only thing I would say is that there needs to be more shade by the pool but apart from that the villa was excellent. I would recommend this Villa to a friend.
The villa was on the other side of the N125 so if you are walking into Tavira you have to be careful with the road. Tavira is lovely, nice to go and have a coffee and sit by the river. The castle is worth a visit. You can go fishing in the river there, there is a fishing shop just off square behind the arches. There is a free internet cafe in the Town Hall (under the arches). Spain isn't far and it's worth getting the ferry from St Antonio as a foot passenger, just don't forget that they have a long siesta about 13.00 - 17.30."
From MW, July 2008
The villa was exactly as described the location is just right so you don't have to rent a car to get around. The property was very clean and well maintained. Graham the pool man is very helpful and a credit to the owner. Also having good neighbours is very benefical. The customer care we received from Angie was fantastic its like having your own personal holiday rep and she is happy to help with any problems or information etc. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone wanting to visit Tavira for a relaxing villa holiday. I would recommend a trip on the little train that travels around Tavira. If you are missing home whilst away I would recommend Mad Hatters English bar, their 10 Euro Mega breakfast is as English as you can get. We didn't really do much else just relax, swim and eat. All I can say is that the Villa is fantastic with great facilities and the Management Team of Angie & Stuart are two of the nicest, friendliest, helpful people you could ever wish to meet. We may be going back next year.
