Home description

Here is a real rural haven. Casa Ribeirinha is the only renovated cottage in this tiny hillside hamlet - so you will have the place all to yourselves. The only sounds around you are birdsong, the breeze, and - out of season - the sound of the stream running through the valley at the base of the hill. You can walk the valley up or down stream and return over the hills. You can breakfast in the sun on the east terrace and have cocktails in the sunset on the west terrace. If you want an experience in the real Algarvian countryside, come and stay at Casa Ribeirinha.

The Algarve / East Algarve region

The Eastern Algarve, Portugal

Why ? When ? Where ?

only 2.30 hrs direct flight from the UK
same time as in the UK

7 new golf courses

When to visit the Eastern Algarve ?

The Algarve has one of the mildest and sunniest climates in Europe. That means it makes a welcome break from the UK at any time of year: winter, spring, summer or autumn.

Winter

In UK terms, the Eastern Algarve doesn't really have a winter, it just goes from a hot dry summer to an extended spring. However, temperatures are lowest and rainfall highest between November and February. But within these months, there are many days of blue skies when daytime temperatures in the sun reach mid to high 20's centigrade and you can quiet easily sunbath. These warm 'winter' days are some of the nicest of the year. However, when the skies are clear, the evenings and the early mornings can be chilly, though it is very rare for temperatures to drop to zero overnight.

Tavira / Estorninhos area

Tavira lies at the centre of the eastern Algarve coast and is its most picturesque town. It sits on both sides of the river Gilão, linked by four road bridges, a train bridge and an ancient pedestrian bridge. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed. Its a big enough town to have everything you want, yet small enough to walk from one side to the other in 15 minutes. At the centre, on a hill rising above Tavira's characteristic pitched roofs, is the castle and the landmark clock tower of Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo. The town is full of old buildings - some dilapidated, others newly renovated. The recently renovated Palacio de Galleria houses art exhibitions. Close by is the novel new attraction of the camera obscurer - don't know what it is ? - try it out. Tavira is most famous for its churches - there's loads of them, though nobody quite agrees on the actual number. The most important are Igreja da Misericórdia and Igreja do Carmo. The idle can sit and watch the world go by from an abundance of pavement cafe's, or else, be real tourists and take a tour of the whole town in its miniature train or even a beautiful horse-drawn carriage. The hungry have a huge choice of restaurants, many specialising in sea food. Self-caterers should head for the fantastic municipal market where a wealth of fresh food is on offer each morning: fish, seafood, meat, deli, fruit and vegetables - much of it caught, reared, killed, made, grown and picked locally. During the summer months, you'll find a good program of evening entertainment, much of it open air and much of it free. The open air Festival of European films is a treat not to miss for discerning cinema goers. Between the city and the sea, you'll find the extensive sea salt industry, oyster and fish farming, many wading birds including stork, flamingo (winter) and avocets, and finally, Tavira's fabulous and - in the summer - busy, beach. Tavira even has its own observatory on a great site just north of the city

Further details indoors:
Casa Ribeirinha is a traditional cottage that has been simply and tastefully restored throughout to maintain its original charm. In contrast, the furnishing throughout is all IKEA and modern. The main cottage has a lounge/dining room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms with double beds (one en-suite to the bathroom). The annex has a further double bedroom and en-suite shower room. Its all low doors, small windows, odd angles and thoroughly charming.

Further details outdoors:
On the east side of the house is a small 'breakfast' terrace overlooking the stream and hills and two small courtyard spaces partially enclosed within ruined stone walls. On the west side of the house, there is a covered, shaded terrace with dining table, a small barbeque and further stone terraces down to the hillside. The views are again over the stream valley and surrounding hills.
