Home description

Casa Ceramista is a hilltop bungalow with panoramic views of the coast from Cabanas to Vila Real. Not over-looked by other houses, it makes a perfect and quiet hideaway. The rear terraced area - with its raised plunge pool and complete enclosure - is ideal for families with small children; its complete privacy makes it ideal for couples. And although the un-populated Algarvian hills stretch for miles to the north, to the south, it is just 7 km to the new golf courses at Monte Rei, 11 km to the town of Vila Nova de Cacela and 13 km to the wonderful beach at Manta Rota.

The Algarve / East Algarve region

In UK terms, the Eastern Algarve doesn't really have a winter, it just goes from a hot dry summer to an extended spring. However, temperatures are lowest and rainfall highest between November and February. But within these months, there are many days of blue skies when daytime temperatures in the sun reach mid to high 20's centigrade and you can quiet easily sunbath. These warm 'winter' days are some of the nicest of the year. However, when the skies are clear, the evenings and the early mornings can be chilly, though it is very rare for temperatures to drop to zero overnight.

Tavira / Faz Fato area

Tavira lies at the centre of the eastern Algarve coast and is its most picturesque town. It sits on both sides of the river Gilão, linked by four road bridges, a train bridge and an ancient pedestrian bridge. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed. Its a big enough town to have everything you want, yet small enough to walk from one side to the other in 15 minutes. At the centre, on a hill rising above Tavira's characteristic pitched roofs, is the castle and the landmark clock tower of Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo. The town is full of old buildings - some dilapidated, others newly renovated. The recently renovated Palacio de Galleria houses art exhibitions. Close by is the novel new attraction of the camera obscurer - don't know what it is ? - try it out. Tavira is most famous for its churches - there's loads of them, though nobody quite agrees on the actual number. The most important are Igreja da Misericórdia and Igreja do Carmo. The idle can sit and watch the world go by from an abundance of pavement cafe's, or else, be real tourists and take a tour of the whole town in its miniature train or even a beautiful horse-drawn carriage. The hungry have a huge choice of restaurants, many specialising in sea food. Self-caterers should head for the fantastic municipal market where a wealth of fresh food is on offer each morning: fish, seafood, meat, deli, fruit and vegetables - much of it caught, reared, killed, made, grown and picked locally. During the summer months, you'll find a good program of evening entertainment, much of it open air and much of it free. The open air Festival of European films is a treat not to miss for discerning cinema goers. Between the city and the sea, you'll find the extensive sea salt industry, oyster and fish farming, many wading birds including stork, flamingo (winter) and avocets, and finally, Tavira's fabulous and - in the summer - busy, beach. Tavira even has its own observatory on a great site just north of the city (see link below).

Further details indoors:
All the accommodation is on one floor. There is a double bedroom and a twin bedroom. They share a bathroom with WC, washbasin, and bath with shower. The main living area of the house is a large 'L'-shaped room containing two seating areas, a dining area and the kitchen with breakfast bar. The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering, including a dishwasher. Doors open out from the lounge areas to the shaded conservatory, open shaded area and the front terrace - all of which have fabulous views down to the coast. There is a further WC and shower in a small room off the rear-terrace.

Further details outdoors:
There is a long, south-facing terrace with panoramic views to the coast, with a shade area set back equipped with sun loungers and dining table. There is also a long shaded terrace to the west of the house, with a built in barbeque. To the rear of the house there is a large terraced area where the raised plunge pool is situated. This area is accessible from the kitchen and is completely enclosed by the house, by a fence and gate, and by the land behind. This makes it entirely private and also very safe for small children. The plunge pool is 5 m in length and roughly tear-drop shaped. It is protected from the breeze to the north by clear panels. Adjacent to the pool is a shaded seating area and there is ample room for sunbathing on the sun-loungers. There is also a built-in barbeque. To the north of the house, you have direct access to the miles and miles of hills. There is also a shaded eastern terrace and there is plenty of space to park. All in all, the house has a range of different outside spaces and facilities which makes it perfect for fresh-air summer living.
