The Algarve / East Algarve region
The Algarve is located in southern county of Portugal and is geographically the most South Westerly tip of Europe. It boasts over 100 sunny beachs from the Ria Formosa Reserve which runs along the Eastern coast to the virtually uninhabited windswept beachs of the Parque Natural da Costa Vicentina on the Western coast. The Algarve is bordered by Spain and it is only a short drive to the cultural and ancient city of Seville in Spain and Portugal's capital, Lisbon.
The Algarve is a relatively small area and has well maintained and easily accessible road system which makes touring and sightseeing very attractive and there are many fine places to visit, such as the 12th century Moorish Castle at Silves, the fortress and training school of Prince Henry the Navigator, and the lighthouse at Cape St Vincent which in olden times, before the discovery of the Americas, was thought of as the end of the world. There are also many cathedrals, churches, museums and stately houses of architectural interest.
In the 17th and 18th century Portugal was a leader in the discoveries of the New World, the Africas and Eastern trade. In recent years this little country has joined the European Union, has a very stable government and enjoys the comforts of modern Europe.
The Algarve is a very popular destination, the consistent good weather and top class golf courses being the main attractions. The region, from the Spanish border town of Villa Real de São Antonio to Cape St Vincent, is about a hundred miles and the depth of the county is less than five miles. The west has a backdrop of the Monchique Mountains with spectacular scenery, spa towns, monasteries, lush vegetation and protects the Algarve from rain. Hence the glorious climate all year round.
Food and wine are institutions here, as is spotless accommodation, courtesy to visitors, genuine friendliness and a pride in service. Most people are conversant in English. There is also an overwhelming respect for the law, which makes the Algarve a particularly safe and relaxing vacation destination.
The old and the new is very apparent here with modern hotels and resorts lying side by side with old farms where you can admire the fig, almond, olive and orange groves. Seafood is abundant and varied and there are many unusual dishes to try. Another aspect of the Algarve are the wide variety of beaches, all graced with thick grained golden sand and all very clean with nice beach restaurants.
Tavira area
The centre of Tavira is only 8 minutes walk from the Townhouse along the River Gilao. As you wander along the cobbled streets, you'll see an abundance of history.
A Roman bridge links the two parts of the town across the River Gilao, its sides decorated with traditional bars and restaurants, there are lots of churches (37 in total) to view, along with the town castle, several monuments and the typical fishermans harbour leading to the River Formosa Natural Park. There is a wonderful daily market selling fresh home grown produce, and the local beach Island is accessible by small ferry boat costing (1euro return) and boasts excellant facilities and a wonderful holiday atmosphere.
Horse drawn carriages and a small train operate around the town and are perfect for seeing all the sights and experienciencing the peaceful ambience
Tavira itself is primarly a town for sight-seeing, dining and relaxing, however, by travelling a little further afield there are a good range of things to do to suit all tastes. For nature lovers there are forest walks, cruises along the River Guadiana or nature trails along the Ria Formosa Reserve where bird watching is in abundance! By travelling towards the West there are some excellent shopping centres in Faro and Guia as well as the famous Water Parks and Zoo Marine (wonderful for children), all easily reached by car (around 45 minutes) or by day trip coach.
The Spanish border town of Ayamonte is a mere 10kms away where the delights of another country can be sampled along with wine, Tapas and shopping and can be reached by bus, train, ferry or car. Seville is around 150km. For budding historians, as well as Tavira, Castro Marim Castle is a must.
GOLF This is perfect accommodation for golfers wishing to sample the excellent courses situated in the Eastern Algarve. Within a 20km radius there are 7 courses to choose from. Benamor and the 2 Quintas (Ria and Cima) are the most popular and can be reached within several minutes.
The prestigious new course of Monte Rei designed by Jack Nicklaus now has its first 18 holes open and is continuing in its development to the second phase offering the height of golfing luxury - although a costly experence, this is a real treat for golfing fanatics wishing to experience a little high life! Travelling only 10kms further on towards Spain, the challenging course of Castro Marim, along with its famous country club comes highly recommended and just across the border are the Costa Esuri and Quinta do Vale courses now growing in popularity.
