The Algarve region
For those of you who do not want to just stay on the beach and want to see more of the original Algarve then a circular drive through Moncarapacho, Estói, Olhão and Tavira is well worth doing, with the A22 link this makes a good half day visit. Being the last area of Portugal to be conquered by the Portuguese King, traces of the Moorish presence are still seen in its unique architecture - terraces, chimneys and whitewashed houses.
The Argarve is a charming region with an idyllic climate from the hills in the north to the coastline of long sandy beaches, rugged cliffs and grottoes.
Not only has the Algarve the best golfing climate in Europe it also has some of the best courses and facilities. To the West, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo courses are within 30 min of the Apartment and Vilamoura a further 15 min further on. Benamor, Quinta de Cima and the Quinta de Ria are within 10 minutes and Castro Marim a further 15 minutes.
Our Apartment is situated in a superb location, only 8km from Junction 16 of the A22 motorway and enjoys the beautiful tranquillity of the unspoilt Eastern Algarve in the small fishing village of Santa Luzia near Tavira. The beach Islands of the Ria Formosa are renowned for being peaceful, uncrowded, safe, unpolluted and extend for 12 km. The nearest beach is Santa Luzia beach which can be reached by aqua taxi. The taxis leave from the new promenade, a few minutes from the apartment and the crossing takes 5 mins. Barril, beach can be seen from the balcony and is a 10 minute walk away. It has a minature train: a great adventure for children.
There are beach restaurants, café bars and shower facilities. The renting of boats, windsurf boards etc are available. Within 4km Tavira offers a great range of shops and supermarkets (Pingo Doce, Lidle), bars/restaurants abound many specialising in seafood. The beautiful river Gilão runs through the centre of town and on those warm summer nights public entertainment can be found in the park by the river edge.
Local activities include diving, surfing, swimming, tennis, walking, cycling, fishing, horse riding, golf, wind-surfing and water skiing. The water shoot park in Loule is only 35min away and is great fun. You can also Swim with the Dolphins at Zoomarine! We have a number of excellent markets nearby (a detailed list will be in the apartment) where you can pick up some real bargains. There is an interesting car-boot near the beach of Fuzeta where you will find some unusual items. Ayamonte, 20 min (the Spanish border) town has a similar market every Saturday. Tourist resort towns with entertainment, bars, restaurants and casinos only a 10 - 40 minute drive away (depending which town you would like to visit).

"Fitted our needs perfectly"
Spacious modern apartment on the outskirts of the village of Santa Luzia. Large balcony overlooking the Ria Formosa ideal for sitting and enjoying a glass of wine to watch the glorious sunsets. We found the people of Santa Luzia friendly and helpful and enjoyed our daily walks along the promenade, with an occasional stop for coffee. Apart from an excursion to Seville and visits to Tavira on the local bus, we didn't want to leave Santa Luzia. A wonderful area for birdwatchers. We hope to return.

Thank you so much for your review and your lovely comments. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay. The apartment is on the first floor so it does not have it's own garden but we have a lovely large balcony with uninterrupted view. From here you can watch the beautiful sunsets and the sheep grazing in the morning.

"Peaceful and relaxing"
My friend and I had a lovely relaxing break staying at this beautiful apartment in peaceful Santa Luzia. The apartment was exactly as described with everything you could need and the owner Sally was very helpful and friendly. The views from the balcony are lush and tranquil and the whole area is super peaceful - the perfect spot for a 'get away from it all' holiday. I'd highly recommend this apartment and area.

"A hidden gem"
For our second visit to Santa Luzia, we stayed at Sally's apartment and it certainly didn't disappoint. With its contemporary decor, spacious rooms, amazing views from the terrace and everything we needed to make us feel at home, it far exceeded our expectations. There's a supermarket just a short walk away which keeps absolutely everything and a fresh fish shop selling locally-caught fish. Santa Luzia is a traditional Portuguese fishing village and you can while away the time watching the fish being brought in and the fishermen repairing their nets outside their huts. Santa Luzia is a hidden gem and it's a great place to stay to get away from the hurly-burly of modern life. We'll definitely be going back to the village and to Sally's apartment. Margaret Montgomery

"Lovely apartment for two on Eastern Algarve - Recommended."
My wife and I have motored to Sally's Apartment on the Ria each October for the last 3 years. We take the ferry from Portsmouth to the north of Spain. It is just over 700 miles from Bilbao or Santander to Santa Luzia depending on how you go through Spain and/or Portugal.
Thje Ria is a narrow strip of tidal water between the Isle of Tavira and the coast of the Algarve. The Atlantic side of the Isle of Tavira has gorgeous sandy beaches. They absorb much of the rougher weather and leave Santa Luzia in a very favoured position. Wehave had excellent weather each time we have been there. Sometimes it is too hot to sit out on the blcony of the apartment until the sun goes down(often with glorious sunsets) about 5pm.
From the balcony you can see the Ria with the vessels passing, the small train that takes you across the Isle of Tavira to Basil Beach and the main line train which cant take you to Faro or Albufeira or Lagos. (A train trip from Tavira to Lagos is a great day out.) Many a morning sheep, often with a egrets on their backs are gra zing just beyond the balcony.
The apartment itself is very well appointed; the kitchen has everything you need and the double bedroom and the living room/dining room are air conditioned and very comfortable. Aswe spend a week going down and another week going home we cater for ourselves at the apartment. The facilities for this are excellent and the hypermarkets at Pingo Doce and Continente in Tavira provide everything you need, although the shops in the village, expecially near the Church are well stocked.
We have had great times at Sally's apartment and have no hesitation in recommending it to you.

This clean and well provided apartment has all that one needs for a stay in the Tavira/Santa Luzia area. The view from the apartment is superb for those who enjoy the natural environment and stunning sunsets. For me this area is a bird watching paradise. The cycles provided allow easy access to Tavira and beyond. However if walking is preferred the promenade to the centre of the village is adjacent. Five minutes walk to local cafes and small supermarkets. Beaches to die for are a 10 minute walk plus either a speed boat to one or a mini-train to the other as both beaches are 600 metres over a tidal inlet. Barril beach has excellent facilities. Eating out in Santa Luzia is the highlight, and inexpensive yet quality cuisine is in abundance. Local bus and taxi services are both punctual and reasonable if an excursion to beautiful Tavira is required.

"Wonderfull view, very confortable apartment"
We stayed in Santa Luzia in August, with our three children. We loved the view, facing the Ria. My children loved the fact that they could see the small train they took to the beach, and also all the birds that visited us in the morning and late afternoon. Very good localization! I wanted to rent a confortable apartment as I had to stay longer periods in the apartment, as I had my new born child with me. We definitely chose well, it was pleasant to stay during the day, while the others went to the beach. I recomend it!
Thank you for the lovely comments and I am so pleased you has such a nice time.
