The Algarve region
The Algarve's 200 kilometre stretch of southern shoreline is one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. The region has attracted visitors since the time of the Phoenicians, but today it caters for millions of tourists a year with its stunning coastline, excellent golf courses and pleasant year round climate. Bordered on two sides by the Atlantic, the Algarve is divided from the rest of Portugal by a series of low lying mountains. In the east, the Guardiana River forms a scenic border with neighbouring Spain. The region's capital, Faro, is built around a charming harbour at the edge of a wide lagoon. Its main attractions include a maritime museum and a 13th century cathedral. The Eastern Algarve is very different compared to the rugged beauty found west of Faro. It’s tidal marshlands have a tranquil beauty and the small resorts along the coast have retained much of their character, looking today as they must have looked long ago. Here, tourism blends in perfectly with local activities creating a relaxed way of life. There is a tinge of excitement and even romance about those ferry or tiny boat trips to the islands, where visitors are rewarded with superb, less crowded bathing beaches and warm waters.
Tavira area
The village of Eiroes is in the beautiful Tavira Mountains, approximately 12kms from Tavira Town. There are several houses and 1 local bar in close proximity to the villa with friendly neighbours, but grocery shops and restaurants can only be reached by car. The most local destinations are Cabanas Fishing Village where you will find a relaxed holiday atmosphere and the historical town of Tavira steeped with charma and interest. The Spanish border is only around 20kms East, with Ayamonte being well worth a visit for shopping. For serious buying, head towards Faro for the Forum Algarve and continue travelling west for Ghia Shopping Ctr near Albufeira where you will also find the water parks and zoos which make a great day out for the kids. The famous and beautiful town of Tavira is located in the heart of the Eastern Algarve and approximately 15km from this villa. As one of the region's oldest and most attractive town, you cannot fail to be enthralled by its charm, character and tranquility. Once known as the capital of the Algarve, you'll see an abundance of history - a Roman bridge links the 2 parts of the town across the River Gilao, its sides decorated with traditional old bars and restaurants. As well as viewing the many fine C18th building and churches (27 in total!), you can visit the old castle, several monuments and the typical fisherman's harbour leading to the River Formosa Natural Park. There is a wonderful daily market selling fresh home grown produce, and the local beach of Tavira accessible by small ferry boat and boast excellent facilities and a wonderful holiday atmosphere. The Algarve is famous for its wonderful sandy shores, and there is an abundance of excellent clean beaches nearby. Other than Tavira Island, we can recommend the small fishing village of Cabanas around 8 km away which can be reached by an inexpensive water taxi from the main street. Manta Rota, approximately 12km away is expansive and ideal for long walks. All beaches offer sun beds and shades for hire for the sun-worshippers and offer snacks and refreshments.
How to get there
Cheap flights available from many airports to Faro from airlines such as Easyjet, Monarch, Flybe, Thomsonfly, as well as scheduled flights. Faro airport is 40km away - around 45 minutes by Car. Car Hire is highly recommended for this property and we can offer very competitive quotes on request.
