The Algarve region
In the East Algarve you can find some of the most beautiful beaches of Portugal, but it's also a region where you can live different experiences. Here you can do nature tourism, hiking, cycling, play golf in several great golf courses or enjoy the traditional gastronomy. There is a lot to be discovered, a lot you can do...or nothing if you prefer! There are places you can't miss:
Cacela Velha (5 minutes walking): Cacela Velha still shows the traces of the Roman and Arabic occupation, and looks as if the time has stopped preserving so much of its influences. Here you have to rest by the Church enjoying the wonderful view and be marveled by the sunset. The views are unforgettable. It's also a great place to have lunch or dinner.
Castro Marim (15 minutes driving): Being a well preserved historic town, Castro Marim is transformed (by the end of August) into a medieval stage, to recreate the Middle Ages.
Tavira (15 minutes driving): Tavira has a very rich history. Its origin dates back around 2.000 BC. After the earthquake in 1755 the town has been completely rebuilt with many fine 18th Century buildings and 37 churches. Here you can take the ferry (10 minutes) to the Island of Tavira or walk in the city resting and enjoying its traditional fish gastronomy.
Vila Real de Santo Antonio (15 minutes driving): In the southeastern point of Portugal where the Guadiana river finds the Atlantic Ocean lies Vila Real. The town was rebuilt in 1775 by the Marques de Pombal who has applied the same concept of town planning that was used in the portuguese capital- Lisbon. Here you can take the ferry to Spain (10 minutes).
