Out and About in Tavira
Walk to the end of Rua Poeta Emiliano da Costa and turn to the left and within seconds you are on the riverside. Walk across the bridge in front of you and you are in the market square where there are frequently live entertainment, market stalls, an ice cream kiosk and where tables and chairs sprawl out by the river.
The Old Market Place is a beautiful structure, with bars and restaurants on the perimeter by the river and market square, craft shops and a newsagent selling daily papers from the UK and most major European countries. There is a large seating area inside offering free WiFi.
A little further out along the river you will pass the colourfully painted fishing boats and across the road a selection of fish restaurants then reach the access point for the ferry, water taxi and river and coastal tours.
Running parallel to this is the main street, Rua Primeiro de Maio, where a variety of shops, banks and less expensive eating places can be found. Continuing to the end of this street past the Via Gale hotel brings you to Tavira's food market, open most days of the week, where a large variety of fish, meat and vegetables can be purchased at amazing prices.
Walking in the opposite direction from the market square brings you past the riverside gardens to the main town square, the Praca da Republica. This and the street leading from here towards the station have recently been pedestrianised. There are a variety of interesting shops, patisseries, cafes and restaurants located here. Part of this area is set out in the form of an amphitheatre, where in the summer, there are live performances almost every night.
This area sits alongside the Roman Bridge beyond which there are some pleasant riverside walks either side of the river.
Crossing back along the river at this point takes you into old fashioned alleyways with more shops and some of the best restaurants in the town. Walking back down the river takes you past a lovely riverside bar and a French delicatessen and wine cellar both ideal for catching the late afternoon sun.
Eating Out
There is a wide choice of restaurants throughout Tavira catering for traditional Portuguese and wider European and other ethnic tastes. Many of these are situated charming situations in the narrow streets and alleyways on the east side of the river along from the Roman Bridge. There are also groups of restaurants around the old market place and in the Praca da Republica and a group row of fish restaurants facing the river just beyond the old market place close to the fishing port. Out of town, there are countless restaurants on the Ilha da Tavira and some good eating places in the neighbouring town of Santa Luzia to the west.
