The Algarve region
Walking, hiking and cycling are all very popular activities as well as bird watching in the Ria Formosa nature reserve. Fishing- Big game trips leave from Tavira and you can fish the lagoons free of charge, main species being Dorada, sole, scabbard fish, bass, ling etc. Boat fishing trips are readily available from many ports.
Driving into the countryside for a leisurely trip around the many towns and villages inland is also a popular pastime, a good suggestion is to follow the Guadiana river which forms the border with Spain, run right alongside the river on the tiny road up to Alcoutim, a lovely place to have lunch overlooking the river and, the Spanish village on the other side, a small ferry will take you across the river to visit!
Why not take the one day boat trip up the Guadiana river. Many activities are available in the area, the Ria Formosa Natural Park is a haven for wild life, birds, flora and forna. Two City Bikes included in price more Cycles are available for hire in Tavira. Walking, Cycling etc etc are all popular activities in this area. Boat trips to the lagoons of the Ria Formosa nature reserve can be arranged. The area is a haven for wildlife and is popular with bird watchers. Bike hire is available in Tavira. We can book boat trips to the beautiful lagoons of the Ria Formosa nature reserve for you upon request.
Nearest supermarket is 750 metres. Nearest bar restaurant 300 metres. The bars, restaurants and shops of Tavira are a gentle 10 minute walk down to the centre with bars and restaurants on the way. Tavira has a large shopping complex.
A good way to get your bearings in Tavira is to take the Tourist road train for a 30 minute ride around Tavira's ancient streets (catch it next to the Roman bridge), the train will take you through the salt flats at Quatro Aguas, look out for the beautiful pink Flamingos as you pass through! There is also a Horse and carriage tour service in the town. There are many bars and restaurants in the town, prices are cheap in the eastern Algarve and the quality of food here is superb!
There are different styles of food provided to a very high standard, traditional Portuguese and seafood dishes, French and European, 1 Chinese and 1 Indian restaurant. Tavira has a few banks incl Barclays. There is a daily fresh food market in Tavira, here you will get fresh local produce including meat, poultry, vegetables, "oh yes!" and seafood! The food market is close to the Vila Gale Hotel on the end of the new road bridge.
Main supermarkets in the area include Pingo Doce, Lidl, Aldi, and many small minimarkets. There is a monthly market in Tavira and many others in towns such as Quarteiras and Loule are well worth a visit, most are Gypsy markets providing all the usual leather goods, clothing, jewelry etc etc.
