The Algarve / East Algarve region
The coastal towns of the eastern Algarve are ‘real’ towns, far more under-developed than those in the Central and Western area of the Algarve. If you are after a more relaxed style of holiday, away from the hordes of tourists and water parks, then the Eastern Algarve will be the place for you. Why is it so undeveloped? The reason for this is probably because the towns along the coast are not generally right on the sea.
They are separated from the Atlantic by salt-pans, marshland and lagoons. These form part of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve which stretches from just south of Faro along the coast to the town of Vila Nova de Cacela, a few kilometres west of the Rio Guadiana river on the Spanish border. The headquarters of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve at Quinta Marim is worth a visit. The beaches you’ll find along the coast are to be found on long sandy islands and...
The Tavira area
Tavira is the most beautiful city in the Algarve Region. If you were never in Tavira, it’s time to start thinking to pack your bags and travel to one of the best places to spend your vacations.
Tavira is a unique experience, mainly because of all its Historical background and untouched archaeologic traces managed to keep it one of the most characteristic cities in representing the Algarve region.
The holiday resort destination of Tavira, in the south-east corner of Portugal, is one of the most photogenic towns along the Algarve coast, sporting white-washed houses topped with decorative chimneys and pyramid shaped Roman-tiled roofs, set among orange, fig and almond trees. The charming town, on the Gilao River, dates back to around 2,000 BC, and also boasts a Moorish Castle, with some splendid views from the ramparts.
There are some attractive churches (37 of them to be exact) to see on holiday in Tavira, including the Church of the Misericordia with a beautiful Renaissance door and carved high altar. Not many of the buildings pre-date the devastating earthquake of 1755, which destroyed much of the Algarve, but the town was painstakingly rebuilt with many fine 18th century buildings.
Tavira flanks both banks of the river, which are linked by a Roman bridge. Along the coast and on an island opposite the town (reached by ferry) are some beautiful isolated sandy beaches, well worth visiting while on holiday in the area.
Tavira is well equipped with utilitarian supermarkets for self-caterers on holiday, and many souvenir shops selling cork items, lace, embroidered goods and shell art. There is an upmarket handcraft shopping centre called "Old Market" for discerning shoppers. The town has a fresh produce market daily plus a NEW shopping center.
Like most of the holiday resort towns on the Algarve, Tavira is a food-lovers haven, especially for those who enjoy seafood. There are numerous restaurants along the quayside and riverbank, serving excellent cuisine at reasonable prices. Recommendations for shellfish and fish dishes are Nora Velha, Marisqueira 4 Aguas, Portas do Mar and O Pátio. Alternatively, Vela 2 and Micromania are popular with locals.
Hunt for seashells on a Tavira Island holiday, and enjoy a variety of water sports, explore the quaint town itself, or play golf at the nearby Benamor Course. It is a good idea to hire a car and explore into Spain to the East (Tavira is close to the border) and along the rest of the Algarve to the West.

We have stayed in Tavira for several years now and tried this accommodation for the first time this year and we will certainly go back. Set in the hills, so a car is essential, the location is really peaceful with panoramic views of the town down to the coast. The Villa is well presented offering plenty of room both inside and out. The garden has apple, peach, lemon and fig trees and various flowering shrubs. Nice pool area and Air Con in the bedrooms and lounge. Everything is there to get into holiday mode straight away. The local town offers many places to eat out but also great shopping if you want to do your own thing at home. Easy flights and good road network make this part of the Algarve a great place to holiday and this Villa is a great place to kick back and relax. |
