Casa Papa Figo is a comfortable four bedroom hillside villa in Santa Catarina, near Tavira. Large terrace and barbecue area with well organised outdoor seating and dining area around the pool. Beautiful views and peaceful countryside setting.

The pool is approximately 5 x 10 metres with steps in the corner with a deep end of 2.5 metres. The pool fence has a lockable gate. The south facing long terrace has various areas for seating, dining and sunbathing. There is a large barrel barbecue close to the dining area (seats 10) under the shade of a huge carob tree. A further raised terrace looks over the pool area with additional seating. The east facing breakfast terrace is surrounded by a big loquat tree, overlooking the herb garden and rural hillside views. There is a long private driveway, lined with oleanders, leading up to the house. There is a second driveway off the road leading to the owners cottage which is totally separate from the villa with a walled garden between the two houses. There are many almond, carob, fig and olive trees on the property - the owners are keen gardeners and the veggie garden provides a year round supply of produce.

The house works well for four couples or even two families with two bedrooms en-suite downstairs and two further bedrooms sharing a bathroom upstairs.

The kitchen is well equipped with dishwasher, electric hob and oven, microwave, coffee machine, two refrigerators, plus washing machine and drier.

The sitting room has a two large sofas with TV Video, DVD and satellite system, a log burner for winter evenings, plus a further area of easy chairs for quiet reading. The dining room has a large table with 12 chairs for indoor entertaining and there is an upright piano for our musical guests plus a log fire.. The house décor has an 'African Theme' with animal print fabrics and paintings.

It is essential to have a car in this secluded area but it is only 25 minutes drive from Faro airport, and a 15 minute drive to the closest beach. There are so many beaches within a short drive that offer beach bars, water taxis to island beaches in the Ria Formosa, ferries or mini train rides to long sandy beaches with little beach restaurants. Tavira (20 minutes away) is a charming riverside town with delightful restaurants, supermarket mall and cinema. castle and lovely old churches and museums to explore. Sao Bras de Alportel (10 minutes away) was the cork trading capital at one time and has some good family restaurants, a costume museum and also our closest supermarkets. Further afield, Loule is a beautiful old town with a great market, cobbled streets and has many musical festivals and festas during the year. We are a 25 minute drive to the border with Spain - Ayamonte is a nice place to visit, just across the Guardiana River.

Santa Catarina is only five minutes away and offers a Post Office, Bank, a great bakery offering fresh bread and cakes daily, a small fresh produce market and a couple of mini supermarkets. The local weekly and monthly markets are great fun to visit and move from village to village each week - you can find local produce and crafts, and clothing.

Eating out in the East Algarve is simply fun and much cheaper than the sophisticated resorts further west. Relaxed family restaurants are really good value, beach side restaurants offer fabulous fresh fish dishes, mountainside establishments offer excellent meat and game cuisine and there are also a few Asian and Italian eateries for those who need their pizza, pasta or curries! However there is nothing to beat the local black pork 'secretos', chicken peri peri or fresh sardines which are available everywhere!

The Algarve has many excellent golf courses and there are at least four clubs within half an hour's drive, (one championship course) and dozens more courses further west. You can also visit 'Splash and Slide' water park, Go Kart track, Segway track, or have lessons in wind surfing, kite surfing, etc. This is good bike riding country and you can hire bikes and helmets locally. There is file in the house containing information and maps of local walks and hikes and information about the area.

Our guests enjoy sitting on the south facing terrace, savouring a glass of delicious local wine, contemplating the stunning views of rural hillside. The joy of a stay at Casa Papa Figo is that this quiet idyll is only a few minutes drive from the village shops for the essentials, beautiful beaches are 20 minutes away and Faro airport a mere 30 minutes drive. The area offers plenty of activities including cycling, walking trails, golf, cinemas, museums and theatres. The helpful owners live in a cottage on the two hectare property and have a file of recommended restaurants, day trips and local information for your perusal.

There are literally miles of sandy beaches nearby, the closest being Fuzeta, 20 minutes away by car. The Ilha de Tavira stretches from Tavira almost to Fuzeta - ferries operate in summer taking you from the river front to some of the best beaches in the Algarve. Popular beaches are Barril (take the beach train) Armona, Culatra, Santa Luzia, Pedras d'el Rei. Many have delightful beach bars and plenty of parking.

There are many first class courses in the area. The nearest is Benamor at Cabanas, a 40 minutes drive. A bit further east near Cacela Velha there are the two courses of Quinta da Ria and Quinta da Cima. Further west the golf complexes at Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura are approximately an hour away by car.

Faro airport is 30 minutes drive on the A22 motorway. This property definitely requires the use of a car to access the beaches, shops, etc. Bike hire available in Moncarapho (10 minutes drive but bikes can be delivered)

Santa Catarina: 5 minutes drive - Post Office, cafe, bakery, pharmacy, bank, news agent, mini market. Monthly farmers market.

Sao Bras de Alportal: 10 minutes drive - Restaurants, supermarkets, banks and shops, clinic.

Fuzeta: 20 minutes drive - Beach, restaurants, market, restaurants.

Spanish Border: 30 minutes drive to Ayamonte, charming little Spanish port on Guardiana River (Border)

The ancient river port of Tavira straddles both sides of the Gilao River, has a collection of charming bridges, palm lined gardens and interesting architecture dating back to Roman times. The old market has been converted into a cultural centre of small shops and restaurants. There is also a modern shopping/cinema complex with plenty of parking.

Olhao is the largest fishing port in the Algarve. The busy fish and vegetable market is open 6 days a week with a vibrant Saturday market. Visit the islands of Armona and Culatra by ferry or water taxi from here.

Estoi is a picturesque old town with a palace, roman ruins and is famous for its May Day festival.

Further east, Cacela Velha is white washed village, overlooking the estuary from its 18th Century fort and pretty church. Manta Rota is a pretty walk further east and offers miles of sandy beaches and cafe bars

The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa comprises an extensive lagoon area that follows 60 km (37 miles) of coastline between Manta Rota and Vale do Lobo. Made up of sand dune islands, marshland, salt-pans and shimmering freshwater lakes, the habitat is sanctuary for an astonishing assortment of flora and fauna, including birds such as the rare purple gallinule. The park headquarters at Quinta de Marim, 3 km (1.5 miles) east of Olhão, has a first-class visitor centre.

"Well worth our second vist - a perfect spot"

We have just returned from our second visit to this little bit of Paradise!
Lovely warm sunshine - clean, clear air! Peace and quiet, lovely views and the wonderful smell of the flowering freesias around this comfortable and well equipped villa. The very discrete and helpful owners have created a lovely ambiance here and a beautiful garden.
One treat this time ( on Bev and Davids recommendation) was going for dinner at Casa da Polve Tasquina in Santa Luzia, right on the waterfront. Where we ate melt in the mouth, delicious Octopus ! While we listened to live Fado --- which was fantastic - great musicians and singers - a real treat!
And we didn't miss out on visiting the lovely Tavira once again ---
Will definetly go back for a third stay here!
