The Tuscany region

Tuscany is known for its gorgeous landscapes, its rich artistic legacy and vast influence on high culture. Tuscany is widely regarded as the true birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and has been home to some of the most influential people in the history of arts and science, such as Petrarch, Dante, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo Galilei, Amerigo Vespucci, Luca Pacioli and Puccini. Due to this, the region has several museums (such as the Uffizi, the Pitti Palace and the Chianciano Museum of Art). Tuscany has a unique culinary tradition, and is famous for its wines (most famous of which are Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Morellino di Scansano and Brunello di Montalcino).

Tavarnelle Val di Pesa

Tavarnelle Val di Pesa is a country in the Province of Florence in the Italian region Tuscany.

It is strategically positioned on the ancient crossroads of two Roman roads - the "Via Cassia" leading from Florence to Siena and on to Rome, and the "Via del Chianti" towards San Donato and Castellina in Chianti. The launch site is situated along this road close to the geographic center of the Chianti region.

The main attraction of the territory of Tavarnelle is the Badia di Passignano (Abbey of Passignano), a monastery existing from the High Middle Ages.

Other sights include:

Church of Santa Lucia al Borghetto, part of a Franciscan monastery known from 1260. The church is an example of Gothic architecture.

Gothic church of Madonna della Neve, with 14th-15th century frescoes.

Church of Santa Maria del Carmine al Morrocco (15th century)

Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie a Pietracupa, founded in 1596, with a Madonna image frescoed by Paolo Schiavo.

Pieve of San Pietro in Bossolo, a Romanesque church known from 990, housing works from Roman, Byzantine and Florentine schools.

Villa di Poggio Petroio, outside the town.

The pieve of San Donato in Poggio (12th century), in Romanesque style, with a basilica plan with a nave and two aisles and three apses. It houses a baptism shell by Giovanni della Robbia (1513) and a triptych by Giovanni del Biondo (1375).

Bridge over the Pesa River in the frazione of Sambuca.

Tignano is a fortified hamlet whose church of San Romolo houses a terracotta tabernacle by Giovanni della Robbia.

The economy of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa is based on agriculture and production of Chianti wine.

Tavarnelle Val di Pesa is between Florence and Siena.

In Tavarnelle Val di Pesa you'll find many activities for tourists like:

Tours wiht baloons, weekly markets, evenings matkets, music concert, riding, typical wine and oil tasting, typical cheese tasting and much more...

"Great holiday home for all with excellent pool and ideal location for visiting Florence and all Tuscan delights."

From the start we were given a very warm welcome from Angela and Alberto also Francesca and Andrea.

The house is ideal for a family (we were 2 adults and three children). There is room for more. Everything you need is there. The swimming pool is great and for our private use. We voted it "the best pool" out of all our holiday homes (& we have visited loads) by the kids and adults too!

The garden is in a fabulous condition with lots of colour, also well maintained and laid out in different areas for table tennis (ping pong), BBQ area, also two sitting areas for alfresco breakfast, lunch and dinner!

This house is a great location for visiting Tuscany, in particular, Florence (Firenze). It was the best side to drive in and park (avoiding going into the restricted roads you cant drive on and get heavily fined if you do) at Michelangelo Piazza (30 mins drive ) - the best view of Florence - and free parking. You can take a short bus ride into centre from here for €1.20 each way. Buy the tickets off the silver food stall on the piazza ( buy tickets for return as well save time looking later). When get on the bus make sure you validate the ticket in the machine.

When eating out in main cities watch out for the hidden cost of cover charge(around €2 a head) and service cost (around 15%). Not all restaurants do this. Before you sit down just ask them if you cant see on menu!

We tried a few restaurants on our days out but found the best food was at a local restaurant, La Vecchia Pizza, in Tavernelle de Pesa. The kids voted this one the best pizza ever (once held by a restaurant in Spoleto Umbria) Best to try to reserve as popular with locals as well!
