The North Island region
Taupo is located in the centre of the North Island about half way between Auckland (NZs largest city) and Wellington ( the capital). It is on the northern shores of Lake Taupo and the surrounding area is known as the Central Plateau. At the southern end of Lake Taupo ( and clearly visible from my house on a clear day are the mountains of the Tongariro National Park - home of fabulous skiing in the winter and fantastic walks in the summer. ( including the famous all day "Tongariro Alpine Crossing"). You can drive there in about an hour and a half.
The area is volcanic with thermal activity obvious in many parts and creating some amazing tourist sights/ activities. The Lake in front of the house has some warm swimming areas and steam can often be seen rising from the cracks in the foreshaw in these spots. The thermal activity is even used for Power Generation.
Taupo itself is only an hours drive from Rotorua - famous for its thermal activity (including geysers and bubbling mud pools) and its displays of Maori culture / handcrafts.
The area known as Hawkes Bay is just one and a half hours drive. Guests can enjoy Art Deco culture and visit many wineries. The Art Deco town of Napier is world Famous for its Deco architecture and culture , and the "Deco week" in February is extremely popular .
Taupo / Lake Terrace area
Taupo has a wealth of activities for the younger and the more sedate visitor. Bungee Jumping ,Skydiving or perhaps Jet Boating or Quad Biking are all within easy reach .
For the less adventurous Taupo has a number of great golf courses, fly fishing (Taupo is famous for its trout fishing),scenic flights, horse riding and stunning walks ( for all levels). There are several trips available on the Lake. Barbery, is a vintage sailing vessel and on a fine day she will take you to the famous Maori Carvings . Steam Launch Alice is believed to be the oldest genuine Steam Vessel in service in New Zealand . Family entertainment includes two swimming pool complexes, mini golf, kayaking, prawn fishing, an interactive volcanic centre, and a cinema complex.
If you enjoy your food and wine you will not be disappointed in Taupo. There are a number of award winning cafes and restaurants. Some offering superb lake or river views and many attached to other attractions such as the prawn farm or a winery. Several are within easy walking distance of my house .The town also offers a great "after dinner" experience with lounge bars, pubs and nightclubs. AND you can walk home !
Taupo also offers some great art and cultural activities ( Taupo Museum is home to NZs award winning Chelsea Garden Show entry) and there are private galleries around Taupo selling a range of hand crafted work from paintings to woodwork to glass work. The weekly market (opposite Woolworths) often has some little gems at bargain prices .
How to get there
Arriving from abroad. International flights fly into Auckland , Wellington , Christchurch and Rotorua.
Taupo has an excellent commuter airport with regular reliable flights from the above airports. There is a shuttle bus service from the airport which will stop outside my holiday home, and Taxis and hire cars are readily available.
Taupo is about 3 hours drive from Auckland and about 4 hours from Wellington.
