Just under 3 miles from Winsford and 3 from Exford (PO/shop, pub, hotel), in the centre of the moor and well off the beaten track (last 1¾ miles via rough hardcore single track), is this very comfortable and relaxed house, recently converted from a large U-shaped barn. It is quite apart and private from three neighbouring farmhouses, in the most wonderfully tranquil spot for nature watching (deer, badgers, buzzards), walking (footpaths crisscross the area) or just kicking back and escaping modernity with only the occasional rambler or horse and rider passing by or farmer tending his sheep. You are welcome to wander and explore the owners' surrounding land, observing the countryside code.  Inside wood floors, good fabrics, excellent original artwork and natural timber. Private, enclosed courtyard (table/chairs). Sliding glazed doors and 2 steps up to good-sized kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, microwave). Cupboard with washer-drier. Two steps down to huge living room with woodburner, TV/DVD and two pairs of sliding glazed doors to the courtyard. Second sitting room/playroom with TV/DVD, comfy sofa, table football, table for jigsaws/games. Four bedrooms, two at each end of the house – from the playroom, a double (6' bed), and a twin plus bathroom (suite plus hand-shower); from the kitchen, a step up and 5 down to a large twin, and another twin (no clothes-hanging space) under the eaves accessed via open tread steps; bathroom (suite plus hand-shower). Spring water. We recommend a 4x4 vehicle for the drive in winter months. A wonderfully remote place to stay and explore Exmoor on foot.

The West Country region

Exmoor: exquisite National Park beside the sea: beech trees, sheep, wheeling buzzards and heather hills, from many of which you look over the sea to Wales and its mountains. Below are the most gracefully carved of steep oak-filled valleys where rushing, bouldered little rivers are paddleable and the red deer spend the winters, and perhaps the most dream-like rose-covered cottage villages of them all, where the pace of life is leisurely. At night, marvellously unpolluted skies for stargazing (recently designated an International Dark Sky Reserve).

Porlock Vale is one of the most beautiful farmed bits of England, Dunkery must be ascended, the area of The Chains is wild and wonderful for walking or riding; the Oare valley (Lorna Doone country) is an excellent place to take Granny for a visit to tiny, fascinating Oare church, a cream tea in Malmsmead and a sunset drive afterwards through the Valley of the Rocks to Woody Bay (if you drive well). Minehead, the main town, is good for sandcastles, has a Butlins (and a good golf course and a harbour) and isn't too big. Medieval Dunster is very pretty and has a fine castle (inhabited, National Trust); Dulverton, on the southern edge of the moor and popular with artists, has interesting shops and galleries; Culbone church, one of England's smallest, is worth walking to. Lots of good food pubs in 'hidden' villages, like Luxborough, where the welcome is warm and the atmosphere relaxed.

Winsford: very pretty little River Exe valley village with shop, church and famous pub. Above it rises heather-covered Winsford Hill. Lovely walk, via The Punchbowl (dramatic), to its top, 2 miles, and on to prehistoric (restored) Tarr Steps on the beautiful River Barle, 4 miles in all. Dunkery (Exmoor's highest hill, fantastic views), about 6 miles; the sea/beach at Minehead (small traditional resort town with harbour, bandstand and Butlins), about 13 miles.

"The perfect spot to "get away from it all" but with every comfort to hand!"

This is the perfect spot to blow the cobwebs away, whilst remaining very civilised. The location is a 10 minute drive down a track off the Winsford to Exford road, in a beautiful valley. Wonderful f… More
