Home description

Situated in an idyllic setting, "La Farfalla" (the Butterfly) is a recently-built family villa set in the midst of its Mediterranean gardens boasting magnolia, oleandar, bougainvillea and hibiscus bushes and a vast array of fruit trees and vines - and so much more. Relaxing under the palm trees by the private swimming pool or sunbathing in the garden or on the balcony you have time to reflect and appreciate that you are in the perfect holiday setting. In the evening the place is transformed into a sensory fiesta, with the magnificent views of the sunset over the ocean, the pervading mixture of scents from the eucalyptus, pines, lavender, rosemary, and Old English rosebushes. You can hear the crickets and birds chirping their evensong as you sit under a star-lit sky sipping a nightcap.

The villa is very flexible, sleeping from 6 to 9 people. The master bedroom (with balcony) has a smaller bedroom leading off it which leads to an en suite bathroom. There is a smaller double bedroom also with private balcony with stunning views of the sunset over the ocean. There is also a twin-bedded room facing the courtyard. The ground floor consists of a good-sized, tastefully fitted bright kitchen, a covered terrace/patio overlooking the pool, (ideal for eating outside in the hot summer days), a spacious living room with log fire and open plan dining room with a comfortable sofa bed. In the villa's library there is a good choice of books (in English, French and Italian), videos, dvds and children's games. Just a five minute drive away there is a 9-hole golf course and a selection of sandy beaches.

During the summer months there is quite a lot of agricultural activity in theneighbouring fields and if you make friends with the local farmers they will often give you some generous samples of tomatoes or water melons or whatever crop they happen to be growing.

The Lazio region

Lazio is divided into five provinces. In the north and west are Viterbo and Rieti, in the centre is the Province of Rome, and towards the south are the provinces of Frosinone and Latina. The province of Viterbo is a hidden treasure, much underestimated and yet-to-be-discovered. It is well worth browsing through the city itself (known as the City of the Popes who spent their leisure time there). During the summer it offers a plethora of cultural events.

Another gem in the province is Caprarola which is home to the Palazzo Farnese, where you can spend a whole day just drinking in its history and culture and wandering through it's magnificent water gardens. It is situated 510 m above sea level and is on the borders of Lake Vico. Nearby Vulci offers the possibility of visiting the Castle and taking an afternoon to walk through its natural reserve, ending up at one of the local agriturismi where you can enjoy a feast of local produce and savour the area's speciality - deliciously tender and succulent maremma steak, barbecued on an open fire.

Montefiascone, Capodimonte, Tuscania, Marta, Lago di Bolsena, are all easily reachable, steeped in history and each unique in its own way. Last but not least, Rome is only an hour's train journey away and needless to say a must for those who have never visited the "Eternal City".

Tarquinia area

The city of Tarquinia is located on the Tyrrhenian coast about 90 km from Rome and 6 km from the sea. Its history dates back to the Etruscan period when it was one of the most powerful cities in Etruria, before being defeated by the Roman Empire. It is perhaps most famous for its National Museum (Palazzo Vitelleschi) and the necropolis (etruscan tombs). The paintings of its frescoed tombs represent a unique Etruscan heritage and depict the customs and traditions of a population still surrounded by mystery. Tarquinia is buzzing with activity during the summer and there are concerts/cultural activities (entry mostly free) every evening. These take place either in the city itself or at the nearby Lido.

The Spinicci beach, just a few kilometres away from the villa, offers the possibility to try your skills at windsurfing and wind gliding. There is also the main lido at Tarquinia where you can hire umbrellas and tables and which has entertainment in the evening for children. It also offers the possibility of hiring bikes and pedaloes and you have a huge choice of pizzerias, restaurants and (genuine) ice cream parlours.During the summer months the Community "Mondo Nuovo" a kilometre from the villa, makes its own bread and offers a selection of home produce (honey from their own bee hives), freshly spit-roasted chicken (you are advised to order it as it's in great demand) and home grown fruit and vegetables.

The local wine merchant (Isa d'Oro) is about 7km away and you can taste the delights of their local vintage. They have their own traditional table wine (excellent quality/price) and superior wines at very reasonable prices if you really want to treat yourself. You have a choice of supermarkets both on the outskirts of the town and in the industrial zone. In the other direction (going towards Grossetto) you have Montalto di Castro, which is only about 8 km away from the villa. There too there is a beautiful beach with all the amenities available. The local Tarquinia market is held on a Wednesday and Saturday morning in the city. If you wish a wider choice then you can try the market in Civitavecchia (28 km away) which is held every morning except Sunday. It's easy to get to and there is a free navette service every 15 minutes from the entrance of Civitavecchia direct to the market, so no problems parking.

During July and August there is a good local bus service during the day which stops just outside the villa and goes via the station into Tarquinia and to the lido or in the other direction to the local beach but a car is really essential if you want to benefit from the evening's activities and to explore the surrounding areas.
Last but not least is the local golf course which is five minutes away by car. It's a nine hole course (soon to become 18) so if you get up early enough you can enjoy a round before coming back and plunging into the pool and then sitting back at the pool side with a delicious home-made cappuccino and a good book from the villa's extensive library.

Just like "la farfalla" (the butterfly) if you fly to us once you'll want to come back again and again.

Ryanair, Easy Jet, Virgin, British Midland Baby, Wizz , Alitalia, Jet2, all fly into Ciampino or, as the case may be, Fiumicino airport.  Ciampino is about a 1-1/4 hour drive and Fiumicino just under an hour.  From Pisa airport it's about a 2-1/2 hour drive but it's really easy and is a straight superstrada all the way.  This airport also has a good train link which takes you right to Tarquinia railway station, which is only 10 minutes drive from the villa.  Civitavecchia port (half an hour drive) is becoming one of the most important ports in Italy and from Sardinia it's only a fast ferry ride away (4-1/2 hrs).  There is also Porto San Stefano and Porto Ercole from where you can take a fast ferry (1 hour trip) to the beautiful Isola di Giglio.

Guestbook for La Farfalla

' What a find! This is a great place for a holiday. A beautiful, family-friendly villa, so comfortable and relaxing. Lots to do and see. We love to go into Tarquinia for lunch then come back and relax by the pool. My favourite thing is sitting on the cool terrace in the evening. Our 4 children just love it-so much space to run around. A visit to Aqua Felix at Civitavecchia is a must for a fun day out. A great base for visiting Rome too- it's only an hour away by train. We will definitely be back. Well done Mrs Labate' . Allen Family, Scotland.
'Villa is charming, spacious and in perfect location, close to everything we wished to visit including local beaches and golf course. We combined sightseeing with lazy afternoons relaxing next to the villa's beautiful pool. Agriturismi a walk away and great sampling local cuisine. Looking forward to visiting again soon! Riddington, England.
