The Lazio region
Tarquinia, situated in northern Lazio, is just over a one-hour drive from Rome. The surrounding countryside bears some resemblance to its close neighbour Tuscany. There is a wonderful diversity here from lush green fields and rolling hills to the nearby clear blue sea. The relaxed atmosphere of this small town combined with the abundant nearby attractions makes it perfect for a family vacation or for the individual who wants to explore the real Italy.
As well as tourism, agriculture is a major local industry. Olive groves and vineyards, cattle, sheep and pig farming are all important to the area. The local cuisine reflects this variety with fresh seafood widely available but also an excellent range of meat and dairy products. There are plenty of excellent restaurants and Trattoria nearby where you can sample Italian food at its best.
Tarquinia / Centro Storico area
Tarquinia enjoys a rich cultural heritage. It was one of the principle cities of ancient Etruria and in recognition of its archaeological importance, the necropolis at Tarquinia was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 2004.
The museum is housed in a Gothic palace just a few minutes walk from the apartment and dates from the 15th century. The necropolis, which is situated on a hill just outside the town, contains 6000 graves. It is particularly noted for its 200 painted tombs, the earliest of which date from the 7th century BC. You can read more about Tarquinia here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarquinia
For those who love the seaside there are plenty of beach leisure facilities and water sports to choose from. Close by Marina Velka has a golf course.
The above are the main things we love about this area. If you have any particular interests that haven't been covered or you would like further details on any of the listed items, please feel free to ask and we would be delighted to help you organise your trip.
