The Lazio region
Lazio is in central Italy on the western coast. It is divided into five provinces. In the north and west, bordering Tuscany and Umbria, are the provinces of Viterbo and Rieti. In the centre of Lazio is the province of Rome, then to the south lie the provinces of Latina and Frosinone.
Rome is of course the principal tourist destination in Lazio, but a holiday in Lazio has much more to offer than just the capital city.
The centre of northern Lazio is Viterbo, known as "the town of the Popes". During the Middle Ages the papacy moved here to escape disorder in the Eternal City. The historic town has a beautiful well preserved medieval centre. Its province offers a wealth of tourist attractions: the lovely Lakes Vico (the smallest of the Italian Lakes)and Bolsena, splendid gardens at the Villa Lante in Bagnaia, a grand palace at Caprarola, and Etruscan remains at Tarquinia and Vulci.

Tarquinia is located near the Tyrrhenian Sea, just west of Viterbo and 80km north west of Rome. A medieval fortified town during the middle ages and contains much evidence of its past, including high walls, numerous towers and narrow streets.
The town of Tarqinia is rich in art and history. Tarquinia is one of the best places to see Etruscan tombs and has an excellent archaelogical museum. The Etruscans were Italy's first real civilization, settling in what now is Northern Lazio, Tuscany, and Umbria. Tarxuna, now Tarquinia was one of the 12 Etruscan cities.

In the square there is a magnificent palace (the Palazzo Vitelleschi) part of it Gothic style and part Romanesque, with a beautiful pillared courtyard. The Palazzo, now the museum, houses an important collection of Etruscan antiquities, including the terracotta statues of two winged horses ("Cavalli Alati") from the 4th Century BC, considered a masterpiece of Etruscan art. You will also see Etruscan sarcophagi and statues.
Tarquinias Etruscan Necropolis, on a hill top just outside the main town has some of the most beautiful and well preserved collections of painted burial tombs, 6,000 are dug into limestone. There are many frescoes in the tombs that depict the daily life of the Etruscan. Paintings date from 6th to 2nd centuries BC. (15 tombs are usually open each day for visitors).
The towns medieval fortifications has no less than 25 towers still standing. Wander through the pleasant town where there and several Romanesque and Gothic churches worth a look at, including the church of Santa Maria in Castello (1121) the oldest church in the town.
