The Costa de la Luz / Cadiz Province region
Whatever comes into your head when you think of a Spanish Costa forget it. The Costa de la Luz is different. Firstly, most of the coast is still undeveloped. Extending from the Straits of Gibraltar up towards Portugal lies mile after mile of awesome, untamed beaches. Few spots have sun beds, let alone high-rise hotels.
Secondly, the Coast of Light is uncompromisingly Spanish. The vast majority of holidaymakers are Spaniards. Few people speak much English, there are hardly any British tourists and no tacky anglicised cafés. Instead, the towns dotted along the coast are packed with tapas bars and restaurants offering fantastic seafood. This is a part of Spain where the siesta is rigorously adhered to, and everyone stays up late; dinner is never before 10pm and the party rarely gets going before midnight. Enjoy!
Tarifa / Central Tarifa area
Located on the southernmost tip of Spain (and Europe!), where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet, the fishing town of Tarifa is a far cry from the overrun and over developed Costa del Sol. Tarifa marks the start of the unspoiled Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) that stretches northwards along Spain's Atlantic coast. Tarifa was a quiet fishing village until 15 years ago when wind surfers began to take advantage of the reliable winds and 10km long beach on the Atlantic side of the town. With the advent of kitesurfing, Tarifa took off.
Today, Tarifa is cosmopolitan and chic and yet it retains a traditional Spanish feel with a good dose of Morocan hippie style thrown in for good measure. In other words, Tarifa is unique. The Old Town, with its cobbled streets and warren of laneways and alleys is renowned for its eclectic bars and clubs and excellent restaurants. The town also boasts two unspoiled beaches, gorgeous views across the straits to Morocco and the whole of the Costa de la Luz to explore.
Tarifa is famous for kite-surfing and wind surfing but there is so much more to do. Go horseriding on the beach or in the mountains. Whale watching excursions leave from the port twice daily. Morocco is just 15km across the Straits. Take a daytrip to Tangiers or go on a longer 3 or 4 day trek into the desert. Explore the unspoiled beaches and white towns of the Cost de la Luz. Check out the Roman ruins at Bolonia or visit Gibraltar.
Or you could just relax. Chances are once you arrive in Tarifa you will not want to leave. With its two beaches (one on the Mediterranean, one on the Atlantic!), beautiful cobbled streets, funky shops, fantastic restaurants and enough bars (both on the beach and in the town) to make a grown man weep, well, why would you want to?
How to get there
Tarifa is located on the southern most tip of Spain approximately 35km west of Gibraltar which is the nearest airport. Other nearby airports include Jerez (1h 15m), Malaga (1hr 30m), Seville (2h).
From the UK, Ryanair to all three airports. From Ireland, Aer Lingus fly to Malaga while Ryanair flies to both Malaga and Seville. There are bus services from all airports to Tarifa, but renting a car is probably the easiest way to travel.
A car is also great for exploring the many beaches and attractions in the surrounding area.
The apartments are located at No 11 Calle San Francisco in the historic Old Town of Tarifa just minutes from the Cafe Central.
