"great location and dog but problems!"

The location of this cottage is brilliant and the view across the Straits to Africa are incredible even though we had been in this area lots of times it still is very impressive. Also being in the Natu… More

This is the story of unbelievable coincidence of several disagreeable and extremely rare issues happening during the one week stay of these guests:
The windmill (alternative energy supply) had returned from the annual revision with damages, producing noise. The battery charger of the substituting noise-reduced diesel generator just failed when guests arrived on Easter Sunday and could not be put in function before they left. The former guests had left same Sunday and had not informed that hot water in the kitchen did not work. So this was discovered when cleaning was done before arrival of the new guests and was repaired in the shortest possible time (Tuesday after Easter). Meanwhile hot water for wash up had to be prepared by kettle. (Besides: hot water in the shower room was always available.)

It is true: This farmhouse, situated in the most environment-protected part of the litoral nature park is not allowed to provide all offers possible by a rental in town. But this is clearly indicated in our adverts! Kitchen provides large freezer and fridge, 4 ring hob, gas- toaster, French coffee machine and about 120 other kitchen things, but no oven, no microwave and no dishwasher.

Also to mention: The living areas of the two cottages, situated in the large finca, face different directions. Each of the houses provides at least two separate terraces.

Back to the windmill: We visited the finca several or many times during this special week, also with tecnical experts and even twice with our lawyer with the purpose to analize the damage(oposite opinions). But we did not enter the private area of the guests. The guard and gardener, Klaus, a quiet, discrete elderly man, responsible for caring and maintaining the finca and for the needs of guests, f.e. changing gas bottles, explaining functioning of boiler, is normally heartly welcome by them. He did his best to let the noisy windmill work as much as possible in periods when the family were out. We were very astonished and ashamed that the guests got the impression to be watched. (Only once in all the years of renting out guests felt also be watched. Maybe it can be seen in context with their - for the owners not acceptable - behaviour.

In the actual case the impression of beeing watched may be partly put down to the following: It was pure chance that Klaus became aware when in the course of a family discussion in the common court of the finca the mother upset her adolescent son from the sunbed and - this was broken - replaced it by another one which belonged to the second farmhouse. (In case of damages caused by normal use it had not been mentioned and we never had asked for compensation.)
Making the balance of damage deposit evening before departure day I had to remind the family of the broken sunbed for what I charged 30 Euro (the most economic ones cost 39 Euro, offered by Carrefour about 20 km away). Additionally I charged 60 Euro for a lamp (glass completely broken) - unfortunately one of a pair of beginning of 19th c. with contemporary glasses, giving a special flair to the room. Surely the glass is not no replaced and therefore this lamp not longer to use. I fixed the damage at a simbolic price of 60 Euro, asuming in favour of the guests. Totally 90 Euro for damages (not 110 Euro), for what the guests were not pleased.

But last not least the most important what we want to say: We really are very sorry that the family not felt comfortable and spent disappointing holidays. And we regret deeply that we all did not find the possibility to clear all this up in good time and friendly atmosphere.
Our sincere strive as owners is that our guests spend agreeable holidays.

Management response

At first, we appreciate the positive statements also given in the review.

The guest had booked Casa Alfarero for herself and her youngest child and the studio (in another one of our houses in the property) for her 2 teenager boys. An extended correspondence and phonecalls had proceeded.
Indeed and unfortunately, some confusion and distress came up also for us when our gardener/security man who welcome the lady in representation of us (beeing abroad) informed us by phone that - just after having arrived and although not even having seen the studio - she refused it and wished to rent instead of the studio the second farmhouse for the two boys.
It was not easy to contact the cleaner and motivate her on Sunday to do the unforeseen preparation of the second house for these guests. But all was done and the boys could move in on Monday. We were happy that all had proceeded and welcome the family warmly when we arrived some days later. We even felt helpful not to charge nothing for the reserved, prepared and the not used studio and to give a considerable reduction of the rent for the second house - regarding that the tenants of both houses were only 4 persons.
Only to remark, we are not familiar with internet banking and the lady paid on installment during several days using cash dispenser when she visited town.

We are really sorry that the lady named us being "distrustful and not hospitable" (inspite of the many statements in our guestbooks were we were mentioned as specially warm, helpful but - on the other hand - discrete persons).
The real reason for the lady's "feeling to be watched" may be the fact that some days before her departure we - by chance - were aware that not the 2 boys were the guests of the second house but another lady and a male! The tenant had not informed us!
This is clearly against our rental conditions. Nevertheless we maintained composure and courtesy but it is not to ignore that our trust was somewhat hurt.

To the further complaints let us remark:
1.) The large property is well fenced and provides 2 protected gates. But the direct access to the beach was more than often let open, so finally we locked it. Generally our guests accept the 150 m more to come to the beach in compensation for a high security, offered in the private ground.
2.) The 2 farmhouses (see pictures) are situated next to each other, but with their backwalls. The living areas of each of them are situated in different directions. Each has its own private terraces with sea views (C. Mar 1, C. Alfarero 2 terraces) and one in common, if wanted (commentary of guests: they feel absolutely private).
3.) The historic farmhouse Casa Alfarero does not claim to be "luxurious". It is simple, but richly and solidly furnished, keeps a lot of its original atmosphere and also the original window size. Indeed the house is inside somewhat dark. Our guests of C. Alfarero, if not outside or on one of the terraces, spend most of their days in the large wind sheltered and partly wine overgroved patio and use the house for well temperated sleeping or TV watching etc.
4.) It is absolutely true: The roads in the nature park are mostly dirt and bumpy. Fortunately the bumpy part to come to the property (although even one of the better ones in the litoral nature park) has less than 600 m. Most of our guests and also we (since several decades) do it with normal motorcars. But you should go the 550 m slowly.

Looking back on the stay of the lady we are sorry for the miscommunication. Inspite of it we felt and feel sympathy for her and her children.
