The Costa de la Luz region

The Costa de la Luz is probably one of the most unspoilt beach areas of Spain, it’s location offers something for everyone. The following are suggested day trips

Seville – two hours – wander the gardens of the Alcazar, see La Giralda and climb to the top of the cathedral, Seville is renowned for it’s vitality so don’t be surprised as you meander the streets of the Barrio Santa Cruz if you bump into impromptu displays of flamenco and guitar playing

Jerez – hour and a half – famous for it’s sherry and horses, sample sherry in the local bodegas or for any motorbikers out there visit the famous MotoGP circuit just outside Jerez

Cadiz – hour – often overshadowed by Seville but has great beaches, wander around the old city finishing with a coffee in the cathedral square and then a boat trip over the estuary to Puerto de Santa Maria for the best sea food in Spain

Ronda – take the train from Sotogrande up to Ronda which is famous worldwide for its dramatic escarpments and views, and for the deep El Tajo gorge

Gibraltar – a little piece of England at the tip of Spain, but watch those cheeky monkeys on the rock!

Bolonia – visit the Roman ruins then exhaust yourself climbing the dunes before tucking into the mouth watering lemon fish at the little restaurant nearby.

Arcos, Vejer, and Midonia Sidonia

Tangiers – 35minutes across the water from Tarifa

Probably easiest to hire a car but there are buses to most of these places from Tarifa it just requires a little planning! The bus station is next to the Repsol garage on the main street.

Tarifa

The southernmost town in Spain is also one of the oldest towns in Spain, Tarifa is surrounded by kilometres of rugged white beaches and unspoilt national parks. The town is enclosed by city walls, with the Gate of Jerez being the main entrance. The old town of Tarifa is a charming place for a stroll with it’s narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, tumbling jasmine and beautiful wrought-iron rejas. There are supposed to be over 300 bars and restaurants in Tarifa hidden in the little streets, the livlier nightlife tends to be in the lower part of the town but plenty of quieter bars away from the crowds can be found.

The apartment is in a small secluded complex with a private swimming pool set in pretty garden. It is at the end of the town overlooking the beach and the small town football stadium and beyond that the national parks. It is about a 10-15 minute walk along the new walkway which follows the beach to the edge of the old town – a very relaxing stroll.

Near to the apartment there are two bars within five minutes with WiFi, and in the summer there are a few chiringuitos on the beach.

As well as all the day trips suggested above Tarifa itself has so much to offer

For the adrenalin junkies

- Kitesurfing

- Windsurfing

- Occasionally surfing but that is better up the coast – wrong type of waves in Tarifa!

- Diving there is a wreck just off Playa Chica in Tarifa

For those who aren’t waterbabies

- Horseriding on the beach

- Quadbiking

- Mountain biking or cycling in the countryside behind Tarifa

- Climbing in Bolonia

Something more sedate

- Learning spanish – contact the Escuela Hispanlense (they speak English too) www.hispalense.com

- Golf – the closest course is at Montemedio about 30 minutes up the coast to Cadiz

- Fishing

- Dolphin and Whale watching tours

- Surrounding National Parks provide lovely walking opportunities.

"Superb location for beach and mountain views"

Despite a hiccup upon arrival, whereupon the number I'd been given by the English owner for Horacio, the local contact didn't work (11.15pm, we'd driven from Malaga airport, first time … More

I have been renting the apartment for a number of years and have never managed to not meet and greet a guest. It was very unfortunate that the week before my representative there had got a new phone number, both numbers had been working the week before, and the problem was further compounded by the fact that I was away travelling so it was difficult to get hold of me too. In future I will be confirming with my representative that guests have arrived so that we don't have this issue again, believe me it was stressful for me too! Hopefully people will appreciate that this was a one off and not something that happens frequently.

"Great location, ocean view, relaxing, nice apartment!!"

On the day of arrival we met Horacio. We had a warm welcome. We loved the apartment. You can see the beach and ocean from out the window. It was clean en tidy and was well equipped and had everything we needed. One thing we missed (we knew this when we booked) in the evenings was a big balcony or terrace to sit outside when the children were asleep. But opening the door of the little balcony was fine to catch some last sunrays of the day and to enjoy the lovely scenery.

The swimming pool was a very good alternative for the kids when they had had it with the sand and ocean. The pool is situated in a great garden where you can sit down. The pool is very clean.

The most days we walked from the apartment to Tarifa old town which took about 15 minutes along the beach walkway where we got diner in this great, excellent restaurant called Los Melli! Very good tapas!
Supermarket and shops are 15 minutes walk from the apartment.

One warning.. do not park your car on the pavement (not even for 2 minutes). I got fined;)
