The Costa de la Luz / Cadiz Province region
The Costa de la Luz is the southern tip of mainland Europe, and offers a slightly cooler climate thanks to the Atlantic breezes. The beaches here are quieter, and wider than those further north up the coast. This area is split in two by the marismas which form the Doňana wildlife reserve, the home of wild cattle, eagles, deer and lynxes.
Tarifa / Central Tarifa area
Tarifa is located at the southernmost tip of Spain, between Gibraltar and Cadiz, and looks directly across the Strait of Gibraltar to the mountains of Morocco. It is a small, authentic Spanish town with a labyrinth of narrow white streets, a very colourful fishing harbor, a castle, and miles of really unspoilt, golden beaches. It is 1 hr. 40 minutes from the airports of both Malaga and Jerez; it is 40 minutes from Gibraltar airport. it is a two hour drive to Seville. The Roman ruins located in the beautiful bay of Bolonia are 25 minutes away. It is seldom too hot. It is renowned as a high wind area, much loved by wind and kite surfers. There are some excellent small restaurants, an abundance of Spanish tapa bars, and fantastic picnic spots.
How to get there
You can fly to Gibraltar, Malaga or Jerez . Find cheap tickets with Ryanair to Jerez. You can either take a bus or a taxi from the airport. Pick-ups can be arranged. Car hire is the easiest option. Dar Cilla Guest House is located on the outskirts of the old town on a no-car street within the old 12th century walls. It is within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, castle, harbor (daily fast ferry to Tangier takes 35 minutes) and the local town beach.
