Our farmhouse is set in 64 acres (24 hectares) of land, with no other property nearby and stunning 360-degree views of the Pyrenees. We are located just outside the village of Montory in the Pays Basque, in the south west of France. Our nearest neighbour is over a kilometre away.

The house has three barns, which are home to swallows, black redstarts and barn owls. The swallows love to take an early evening drink from the swimming pool.

We are fortunate to experience wonderful Indian summers in the Basque and Bearn regions. We rarely close the heated salt-water pool before the end of October as temperatures can still reach 26C and we open it again at the end of May.

The house offers contemporary living and has a spacious kitchen/diner with a seating area containing two sofas. It is extremely well equipped with modern appliances such as an American-style fridge/freezer and coffee-maker (filter, espresso and cappuccino). Next to it is the games rooms, with full size table tennis and pool tables. There is also an extensive DVD library.

On the first floor is a large living room with an extensive DVD and music library. The spacious bedrooms are furnished by the owners with items collected on their travels: Turkish and Moroccan ceramics, antique rugs, kilims, lanterns and pictures. There are two luxury bathrooms. Visitors are provided with bedding, towels and pool towels.

Outside is the heated swimming pool, with decked sun bed area. The orchard provides a shady place to rest and visitors are welcome to pick the fruit when in season.

The property is cleaned once a week and bed linen and towels are included.

The Basque Country region

The house is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, which provide a diversity of landscapes including snow-clad peaks, dense forest, rich valleys of farmland, and deep canyons. The area is famous for its walks: the Haute Randonnee Pyreneenne and the GR10, the long distance path that traverses the Pyrenees from Atlantic to the Mediterranean. It also provides home to a range of wildlife - from birds of prey to deer and wild boar.

The Pyrenees provide a wealth of activities all year round. Warm days start in March - temperatures in summer can reach 36 degrees C and often continue until the end of October. Autumn is stunning providing beautiful colours with warm, bright sunny days, while the winter brings snow and skiing.

Tardets-Sorholus

The village of Montory is less than a mile from the house and features a shop, post office, bar and restaurant. The area is ideal for families and friends as it offers something for everyone. If you like walking, there are hundreds of circular walks through or around the mountains. The area is famous for birdwatching (particularly birds of prey including kites, eagles, owls and the rare Egyptian vulture). For the more active, rock climbing, abseiling, kayaking, rafting and skiing are just some of the activities available in the vicinity. The Tour de France passes through the Pyrenees every year so, if you are a keen cyclist, the area is full of VTT trails.

For the foodies, there are plenty of treats on offer. As well as local vineyards making Jurancon wine, a much underrated appellation south of Pau making white wines from a blend of the twin varieties Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng, there is a Route de Fromage where it is possible to try literally hundreds of local cheeses from the fermiers themselves. These AOC recognised cheeses are mainly made from sheep's milk (Brebis) in mountain huts as transhumance (the movement of sheep and cows in summer to mountain pastures) is still a way of life for shepherds of this region and are found throughout the Bearn and Basque regions in the Ossau and Iraty valleys.

Montory is also only an hour and a half drive from the Atlantic coast, with the luxury seaside resort of Biarritz or the smaller town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, which is also an active fishing port and fabulous fish restaurants.
