The Sicily region
Strategically situated between the toe of Italy and Africa and influenced by a fascinating range of cultures, the island of Sicily has a natural beauty that is truly breathtaking. The landscape is rich and diverse, ranging from picturesque coastal resorts with stunning beaches to the dramatic slopes of Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano.
All over Sicily you will find historical sites that hint towards the island’s rich and diverse past. Evidence of Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Catalan, and Greek influences, to name just a few, are still visible in abundance across the island. Taormina is an ideal base to visit Sicily, including the stunning Aeolian Islands (UNESCO World Heritage site), the baroque towns of the Val di Noto (Caltagirone, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa, all UNESCO WH sites), Siracusa and its historical centre Ortigia (UNESCO WH site), Villa Romana del Casale with its mosaics (UNESCO WH site), Agrigento with its Greek temples (UNESCO WH site)… thousands of years of history in one island!
Sicily is also renowned for its fabulous food and fine wine (it has more vineyards than any of the other Italian regions) while its superb Mediterranean climate with mild-to-warm winters and warm-to-hot summers make the island an ideal all-year round destination. However you choose to spend your time- at rest, enjoying la dolce vita or in gentle exploration- memories of this wonderful island will stay with you forever.
Taormina area
Taormina is one of the most celebrated resorts in the Mediterranean with a distinctly late medieval character and an intriguing network of small streets and alleyways which host a marvellous selection of pavement cafés, elegant shops, restaurants and bars.
A luxuriant “macchia” covers the heights above the town, interspersed with dark cypresses, olive trees, pines, palm trees and cacti. Orange and lemon trees fill the air with their unforgettable Mediterranean scent. The town centre is home to a large number of buildings and relics of historical interest from the Greek and Roman periods, including the stunning Greco-Roman amphitheatre, which is also the venue for the famous “Taormina Art Festival” in the summer, with its fantastic programme of international music, theatre, art, opera, dance and movies.
A panoramic cable car (located at only 150 meters from Villa Carla) quickly connects (a couple of minutes) the old town to the finest beaches of Taormina: choose from Mazzaro, Capo Taormina, Spisone and gorgeous Isola Bella bay for idyllic hours catching the rays, trying out water sports or enjoying the many local boat excursions. When you can drag yourself away from the beach area, a stroll along Taormina's medieval streets, overflowing with designer boutiques, shops and cafes, provides more delight.
Within easy reach of Taormina is Mount Etna volcano (30 mins drive) for a cool day immersed in nature (including the stunning golf course “Il Picciolo” with spectacular and scenic views for all 18 holes, set among among oaks, hazels and vineyards), the medieval village of Castelmola (10 mins) with its narrow streets and breathtaking views, Alcantara valley with its magnificent gorges (15 mins), and Catania (40 mins) with its elegant shops and historical buildings and monuments.
