Home description

Located on the east of Sicily, Castiglione di Sicilia is tranquil and yet very close to some of the most important tourist sights in Sicily: mount Etna, Gole Dell’Alcantara, Taormina and Giardini Naxos. Castiglione di Sicilia is a new touristic place, ideal to spend your holiday.

This beautiful house in Castiglione di Sicilia is very light and have 3 single beds, 1 double bed, tv, fully equipped kitchen, fridge, small freezer, bathroom. Furnishings are in typical Sicilian style. Have 1 balcony: with SPECTACULAR view in Alcantara valley. My house is very very large: 180 sq.m. Ideal for a break from the stress of your daily life or for a romantic holiday or your honeymoon! The beautiful house is located on the historical centre of Castiglione di Sicilia (medieval village). This house is strategically located for whoever wishes to visit this particular area of Eastern Sicily. If a fantastic view, quietness and handiness are what you desire to have in your holidays, here you'll have. This house is a very very typical Sicily house.

As soon as you arrive in Taormina, you will feel the magical, mythical atmosphere spread all around which has enchanted visitors from all over the world for years and years. Settled on a hill of the Monte Tauro, Taormina dominates two grand, sweeping bays below. On the southern side, the top of Mount Etna, the European highest active volcano, often capped with snow, offeris to visitors a breathtaking, dramatic and memorable view over almost one hundred miles of Mediterranean sea.

It is an ideal place to spend unforgettable Italian holidays while discovering the charm of the Castiglione di Sicilia.

The Sicily region

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and the richest in history and art. The majority of the population live in the coastal areas, while the hinterland suffered a massive emigration, which left the inner, rural territories greatly underpopulated. Sicily is a great producer of citrus fruit, almonds, vegetables, wine and oil, as well as a the first fishing region in Italy. Also the mineral resources are remarkable: sulfur, salt, natural gas, petroleum. Tourism is a great resource, thanks to the magnificent coastal areas and beaches, the abundance of archeological sites and the art centres, where relics of the Greek, Norman and Saracen civilization are among the richest in Europe, and immersed in a Mediterranean landscape of colours and perfumes that always attracted visitors and poets, like the immortal Goethe who wrote of Sicily "Kennst du das Land, wo die Zitronen bluhm...".

Taormina / Castiglione di Sicilia area

Castiglione di Sicilia “The villages of Etna” are famous for their ancient lava flows, the architecture of their seventeenth century churches, their delicious local produce and their Norman castles. Situated 700 metres above sea level, they are a favourite retreat of the city dwellers who, in summer are in search of quiet, fresh air, while in winter are in search of snow for skiing.

Halfway between Etna mount and Taormina, Castiglione di Sicilia can be reached in less than one hour from Fontanarossa airport in Catania. Near my Castiglione di Sicilia house you can find: Supermarket, Restaurants, Bar, Butcher's, Baker's, Wine Shop, Patries, Book Shop around 150-300mt.

Is also possible to taste the most famous: 'Granite’ (special ice-cream with a various fruit or cream taste). You can ask to taste 'Paste di Mandorla' or 'Cannoli alla Ricotta', or 'Cassata Siciliana' special local pastries. The house is located in the historical centre and is also possible to admire the magical view by the balcony.

Taormina really seems to be born as a tourist resort since past times, when ancient people like the Sicels, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Saracens, Arabs, Normans and Spaniards chose it as their residential site thank to its favourable position, mild climate and magic atmosphere. Nowadays visitors can still find fine examples of Taormina's golden times: the splendid Greek Theater, the Roman 'Naumachiae', the 13th century Cathedral of Saint Nicolò, the 14th century Palazzo Corvaja.

Taormina: beautiful tourist town, rich of cultural events with music and dance and theatre performances throughout the Summer. Its charm is still intact in the winter time with the view of the volcano Etna covered with snow and a picturesque seascape.

Few people are aware that Etna and Castiglione di Sicilia are a popular locations for skiers in winter. The closest ski-facilities are in Piano Provenzano (Linguaglossa), but can also be found at Rifugio Sapienza (Nicolosi). On some glorious days in winter, it’s even possible to ski the frozen slopes in the morning enjoying a wonderful panoramic view of the Mediterranean, and then, the same afternoon, go and sunbathe on the beaches below! Taormina and Giardini Naxos (with sandy beach) distance only a 15 min. drive.

The ski resort (Volcano Etna) was damaged seriously by the eruptions of 2001-2002. However the locality is one of the favourite touristic destinations, because it is the departuring-point to visit the summit craters of the volcano. Fortunately the lava flows had saved the Sapienza’s refuge, strategical symbol of the ski resort. The skilifts and the cableway are situated between 1900mt and 2700mt of altitude; So, if the season is favourable it’s possible to ski for a few months. The slopes of this versant offer good opportunities of amusement to expert skiers and also to beginners with its 20km of tracks. The new visitor on the volcano Etna will be surprised seeing the chestnut, birch and pine woods sweeped by the lava flows. From the tracks of this ski resort is possible to admire the view of the near Ionio sea and Catania

Nearby - Volcano Etna - “Piano Provenzana' cable cars and ski facilities – Etna ean towns Randazzo, Castiglione and Francavilla di Sicilia (medieval Etna villages with Norman castles) - Taormina & Giardini Naxos - Gole d'Alcantara, a delightful gorge. The unique canyon was created by a splintering collision of volcanic magma and cooling water.

I recommend to visit the volcano Etna, completely unique , especially if it erupts! Also, visit the Alcantara flumes with its cold water.

Guestbook for SPECTACULAR VIEW HOUSE

Guestbook from Mrs Mike: “Just spent 2 weeks here and had an absolutely fantastic time! House is equipped for our family of 4, lovely balcony, mountain views (Alcantara valley) stunning in every direction, lots to do and see locally and within easy reach of beaches and coastal towns. This is right off the tourist trail and the perfect way to see Sicily.
Mike and Laura had the most fantastic holiday and will definitely return!!”

Guestbook from Paul: “Spent May half term at the property with two young daughters (aged 9 and 5). The house is perfectly located, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery and amazing views of Alcantara valley out of the bedroom windows. The house itself is basically but comfortably furnished and we had everything
we needed for the week.
Close enough to Etna, Taormina, Giardini Naxos and Syracusa for day trips, very near to some lovely little mountain villages and the stunning Alcatara Gorges.”
