The Sicily region
The largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily has an abundance of natural and historical treasures. The island’s rich history – its periods under Greek, Arab and Norman influence – have left a unique legacy. Palermo, the foremost city on the island, is best experienced by strolling down the city’s oldest road – Via Vittorio Emanuele and appreciating the Moorish architecture and the Botanical Gardens which Goethe used to frequent
Taormina / Giardini Naxos area
Giardini Naxos is a popular tourist destination, famous for its beaches and its small, but bustling fishing port. Sunny days on the beach are what holidays in Giardini Naxos are all about.
Framing a picturesque bay overlooked by distant Mount Etna, most Giardini Naxos holidays concentrate on the sensational crescent-shaped sand beach. Lapped by shimmering Mediterranean waters and replete with watersports and lidos, it's a lively spot in summer perfect for catching the rays and chilling out Sicilian style.
Evenings are an important part of holidays in Giardini Naxos. Come sundown, night owls will love bar hopping along the buzzy waterfront. And if you're out for a quieter kind of evening, there's always a lantern-lit trattoria terrace perfect for a starlit supper.
Giardini Naxos is actually four places rolled into one. There's the charming old town. The lively seafront. The Cape Schiso harbour area. And last but not least, the gorgeous Garden Resort of Recanati. Naxos was the first ever Greek colony on the island, and there are some remains to visit, set against the stunning backdrop of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna.
Mind you, if you're into walking and glorious scenery, there's the Alcantara Gorge just a few miles inland. As for the kids, there's a little funfair in Recanati, where they can bounce off some energy on the trampolines or test their putting skills on the mini-golf. Every Saturday the large local market at Recanti is well worth a visit to get plenty of bargains, including clothing, accessories, fruit and vegetables
Taormina is famous for its tourism which makes of it one of the chief town of Sicilian tourism. The pretty town bases its production upon vegetables and fruit and also upon fresh fish. Local handicraft is based upon wood and iron works and handmade embroideries. It hosts a magnificent amphitheater with a breathtaking view of Mount Etna in the background. The theater, built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC and remodeled by the Romans, is still used today and hosts the famous Taormina Film Festival. A much smaller Roman theater, the Odeon, is to be found near the Church of Santa Caterina.

Guestbook for Casa Nerina
Very nice apartment in quiet area with all modern conveniences we needed. We found Giardini Naxos just great, the restaurants were welcoming with a good range of food (ask for local wine only 7euros an ltr) their season had not really started but the temp. was 28c so late may is a good time to go, the town its self was laid back and not to touristy unlike nearby Taormina so was glad to get back to giardini... taking a train is also a good idea and not expensive, mount etna is a must. We would go back there for a week in may as the location is very good. (John and Barbara Woody - UK)
The village of Giardini Naxos has plenty of facilities for tourists. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops to fill your time well. The pretty resort of Taormina is more classic Italy where there are plenty of bars to sit and watch the world go by, though it is considerably more expensive than Giardini. Sicily is a vast island with plenty to visit .We enjoyed the holiday very much and would like to come back in the future. (Kathleen and Roger Roots -UK)
