The Sicily region
Sicily is an autonomous region of Italy. Of all the regions of Italy, Sicily covers the largest land area at 25,708 km² and currently has just over five million inhabitants. It is also the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, several much smaller islands surrounding it are also considered to be part of Sicily.
Throughout much of its history, Sicily has been considered a crucial strategic location due in large part to its importance for Mediterranean trade routes. The area was highly regarded as part of Magna Graecia, with Cicero describing Siracusa as the greatest and most beautiful city of all Ancient Greece.
Although today Sicily is a region of Italy, the island was once a city-state in its own right, and as the Kingdom of Sicily ruled from Palermo over southern Italy, Sicily, and Malta. It later became a part of the Two Sicilies under the Bourbons, a kingdom governed from Naples that comprised both the island itself and most of Southern Italy. The Italian unification of 1860 led to the dissolution of this kingdom, and Sicily became an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Italy.
Sicily is considered to be highly rich in its own unique culture, especially with regard to the arts, cuisine, architecture and language. The Sicilian economy is largely based on agriculture (mainly orange and lemon orchards); this same rural countryside has attracted significant tourism in the modern age as its natural beauty is highly regarded.
Noto, Caltagirone, Catania, Ragusa, Taormina and particularly Acireale contain some of Italy's best examples of Baroque architecture, carved in the local red sandstone. Also, some of the most notable and best preserved temples and other structures of the Greek World are located in Sicily
Sicily's position means that it enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild to warm, wet winters and warm to hot, dry summers.
Taormina / Letojanni area
The fishermen’s village Letojanni is located at the south district of Taormina. Here, houses are built in Mediterranean style with bright and colourful facades, around the main beach, overlooking one of the world’s most beautiful bays.
Letojanni beach has both free space and private lidos where you can rent sun beds and umbrellas. You can do various water sports here and it is ideal for children. Right in front of the beach is the main square with a cute little church as well as cafes, restaurants and bars. The square and the small pedestrian streets around it with shops and boutiques are the actual centre of the village, only a 5 minutes walk away from the apartment.
The area is also vivid at night when local villagers as well as tourists are enjoying their ‘aperitivo’, dinner, drinks or are just out for a nice walk in the village. Next to the fishing industry, central to the region’s character are the cultivation of wine, olives, almonds and various fruits and vegetables, making the local cuisine an especially joyful experience. Fresh and organic local produce is sold at the many daily markets and delicatessen shops around the main square and there are several restaurants, serving typical Sicilian cuisine.
Letojanni is a small town, but you can find everything you need within walking distance: supermarkets, shops, restaurants, pharmacies, travel agencies, banks, post office, internet points, gas station, bus stops, railway station -even international magazines and newspapers in the original languages.Special interest holidaysThe main attraction in Letojanni itself is the beach with its various water sports activities and sun-bathing. There is also Tennis, golfing at the nearby ‘Il Picciolo Golf Club’(18 holes, par 72) and trekking/skiing (only in the winter) at Mount Etna.
The convenient location allows easy excursions to close by Taormina and its surrounding villages, to Messina, Catania, or also to Siracusa, which is on the list of world heritage sites. Mount Etna is an unforgettable experience, it is Europe's largest active volcano and one of the most active on Earth. Mount Etna lies near the Ionian coast of Sicily and occupies a surface area of around 1,190 sq km with a perimetre of 140 miles. It changes frequently according to eruptive activity or minor collapse events at the top craters and is currently standing about 3,300 m high.
How to get there
The closest airport is in Catania, 52 kilometres or a 40 min drive to/from Letojanni (Taormina highway exit). On request, we organise transfer from the airport to Letojanni and return.
To travel around to the nearby villages, you can take a public bus or train directly from Letojanni. The best way to get to further away destinations is by car; there are several car rental companies in Letojanni.
