The Sicily region
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, north-east it is separated from the peninsula by the Strait of Messina and is bathed by the Ionian Sea to the east, south-west is separated from Africa by the Strait of Sicily.
The oldest traces of human life on the island date back to 12,000 BC about. Protohistoric cultures had flourished in these Thapsos, Castelluccio, Stentinello. Peoples from the continent or from the Mediterranean settled there later: among them the Sicani, and the Elymians the Sicilians. The eighth century B.C. saw Sicily colonized by the Phoenicians and the Greeks and the next 600 years to become the battlefield of war greek-Punic and Roman-Punic. The island was so subdued by the Romans and was part of the empire until its fall in the fifth century AD It was then conquered land, and during the High Middle Ages, subdued by the Vandals, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans. Under the Norman Kingdom of Sicily was born which lasted from 1130 to 1816, then subject to the Aragonese, the Holy Roman Empire, and finally the Bourbons under which turned into Kingdom of the Two Sicilies
There are sandy beaches and endless flat, or stones, small and steep white cliffs, from the many shades of ocher, yellow and gray, even black lava.
Triangular in shape, the ancient name for Sicily was Trinacria or Triquetra. The northern coast, high and rocky, open the Tyrrhenian Sea with frequent and large bays, such as the Gulfs of Castellammare del Golfo, Palermo, Termini Imerese, Patti, Milazzo and many other smaller beaches that are home to large blankets of fine sand.
To the east the Ionian coast is more varied; narrow gravel beaches almost to Taormina and between the mouth of the river Alcantara and Ripon; indented to the south, with coves and bays such as Giardini Naxos; flows as in Acireale, and rugged basalt cliffs to Catania. The wide gulf of Catania has a golden sandy beach at its end but the resume and rocky coast with a series of fjords including that of Brucoli. So the wide bay of Augusta, home to the largest commercial port in Sicily, and the Gulf of Syracuse in which the costs shall resume sandy almost to Cape Passero. The southern coast - in the face of Africa - is generally sandy and uniform in the central part of the gulf formed by the largest in the region, the Gulf of Gela, and is more varied in the Ragusa and Agrigento and Trapani in the stretch.
Because of its location, the region and its surrounding islands are affected by intense volcanic activity. The most important volcanoes are: Mount Etna, Stromboli and Vulcano. They are a uniquely belong to three different types: eruptions of basaltic lavas interspersed with lulls the first; continuous eruptions and lava fountains, the second, the characteristics of which have been taken as a typological model by scientists in the field, who coined the term to describe the type Strombolian activity similar terrestrial volcanoes; Finally, explosive Plinian or the third, characterized by long periods of apparent calm and violent eruptions
The Sicilian rivers are all limited in scope and extent. Those are called rivers north of the Apennines, and are as torrential summer are almost perennially dry. The only streams which reach appreciable size are the Himera South, the longest on the island, and the Simeto, the one with the wider catchment basin. Flow into the Ionian Sea Simeto, Alcantara, Agro, the Cyane and the Anapo, in the Tyrrhenian Sea and the North Himera Torto, while in the Strait of Sicily Plane trees, the Southern Himera (or Salty) and Belice.
With regard to the natural lakes, except Lake Pergusa and the semi-artificial lake Biviere Lentini, Sicily it is virtually free. The lake Pergusa source paleovulcanica, is famous for the ancient myths and legends concerning him and fauna and the flora that surrounds him; it runs around a racetrack, was the seat of a Formula One Grand Prix 3000. lake is now at risk of drying up, having no tributaries, due to the steady withdrawal of water for civil use. The construction of dams has created large reservoirs, such as Lake and Lake dell'Ancipa Pozzillo (the largest island). We must remember also the Orange Lake, Lake of Piana degli Albanesi and Lake Ogliastro.
The climate of Sicily is typically Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild and rainy winters, with very changeable intermediate seasons. On the coasts, especially the south-west, the climate is more affected by the current African so summers can be scorching.
Contrary to the common places that see the island of Sicily as hot even in winter, especially along the Tyrrhenian coast and inland areas, winters can be too rigid and typical continental climate.
The abundant snow falls in excess of 900-1000 meters, but any cold waves can easily carry it in the hills and even in coastal cities (the latter phenomenon is more common in Messina). The interior mountains, particularly Nebrodis Etna and Madonie and enjoy a full alpine climate. On the summit of the volcano is not uncommon to see snow even in July, when the temperature is lowered to the usual Atlantic currents that beat the island in late July, early August. In neviere hill and mountain snow keeps well until June, and many countries are living with a far milder climate. On the other hand, especially in the summer it is not uncommon that there is the south wind, the wind from the Sahara. The rainfall is low, and the water deficit is revealed in some provinces where water crises can happen sometimes. This table summarizes the data collected by three meteorological stations examples in Sicily.
the apartment, located in the town of Taormina, is very large, with parking and a large terrace equipped with every comfort, close to the beautiful beaches of Naxos, Mazzarò, Isola Bella, Letojann, Acitrezza, the Alcantara Gorges and the Etna volcano
