The Sicily region
Sicily is the largest island in the mediterranean sea and....the place where the mountains meet the sea. Sicilia, the island in the sun, is home to Heavenly beaches, majestic mountains and Europe's greatest natural wonder, mount Etna. Sicily's coasts are gold with orange and lemon orchards. Taormina / Castiglione di Sicilia area
Francavilla di Sicilia is a city at 621m a.s.l. overlooking the Alcantara Valley. It totals some 5,000 inhabitants.In 1092 the Abbey of San Salvatore di Placa was built, and the town grew around it.The bridge over the Alcantara River is of the same epoch, hence called Ponte Medievale.The remains of a 7th-9th century Byzantine Church called “Cuba” are located off town, along the way to Mojo Alcantara. Casa Rinoto is immersed in the Alcantara Valley, a true oasis between Mount Etna and Taormina. Visit the spectacular gorges, created by the erosion and cooling of the lava, flowing from a side crater of Mount Etna. There are several good restaurants in the surroundings, where you can taste the authentic and excellent Sicilian cuisine and wine. From Francavilla it is 20 minutes drive to the sandy beach of Giardini Naxos.
