The Sicily region
It is impossible to understand contemporary Sicily without knowing something about her turbulent history. The island, the largest and most luxurious of the Mediterranean, has a richer and more eventful past than any of the other islands dotted around the Mediterranean. Throughout the ages, every great nearby civilisation has at one time turned his attention towards the island transforming its landscape and people but never conquering its independent spirit. Sicily has been the crossroads of the ancient world : Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Geeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Aragonese and Bourbons have held the island, all contributing to its rich artistic heritage.
Nowhere in your travels can you discover a richer and more diverse archeological treasure-trove : from the world famous "Valley of the Temples" in Agrigento, to hundreds of other wonders as the impressing Greek theatres of Taormina, Siracusa and Segesta, the stupendous temples of Selinunte and Segesta, the Greek colonies of Naxos, Lentini, Tyndaris and Eraclea Minoa, the beautiful mosaics of the roman "Villa del Casale" in Piazza Armerina, the Arab mosques in Palermo, the outstanding Norman cathedrals of Monreale, Palermo and Cefalù, the splendid baroque churces and buldings of Palermo, Noto, Catania and Acireale, the medieval towns of Erice and Taormina – just to mention a few.
Besides Sicily has on of the most pleasant climates in Europe, and every season has its own attraction. The average temperature in the deep midwinter is of 10-12 °,and in sunny days it can be warm enough to walk around in a tee-shirt. In February the almond trees are in blossom. In March and April the wild flowers begin to bloom all over Sicily and on the coast the first bathers start taking to the waters(though the water is still bracing). It's well worth a trip just to experience the Easter processions , bringing together religion, folklore and tradition. All over the island , in large towns and tiny villages alike, processions weave their way through narrow streets and piazzas until they finally arrive at the local parish church or Cathedral. In May the temperatures are ideal for walking with the mountain slopes exploding in colour. In June the sea is warm but the beaches are still deserted , except at weekends when the first Sicilians start to brave the waters. The fruit trees are laden with cherries , plums, peaches , apricots. In July and especially in August the coast is crowded but the beautiful areas of the interior ( and a few "undiscovered" parts of the coast ) are however relatively unfrequented. In September there is the grapes harvest or "vendemmia", temperatures remain very comfortable and the island retains that summer feeling , but without the crowds.
October is one of the most beautiful periods for country walking with the vines turning to red and orange in the vast vineyards on M.Etna. In November often the temperatures stay in the high twenties during the day, even if it can rain (and rain is very welcome),though the big storms that often sweep the Italian peninsula generally pass safely to the north of Sicily. The oranges and mandarins season is starting. In December the temperatures during the day can still be extremely agreeable.
Taormina area
On your arrival in Taormina, you will feel the magical, mythic atmosphere all around which has enchanted visitors from all over the world for years and years. Settled on a hill 200 mt. above the sea level, Taormina dominates the coast line with its beaches, facing the magnificent Mount Etna, the highest European active volcano which often offers unexpected spectacular eruptions. Since the opening of the first hotel in 1874, Taormina has become one of the world top touristic destinations where visitors can experience a perfect combination of old times charming atmosphere, preservation of history and culture, an elegant and lively way of life to be enjoyed in relaxing walks through the old town pedestrian areas, which is only 4 minutes walking distance from the apartment. During the summer the ancient Greek Theatre becomes an alive stage where international cultural events take place, like: theatre, classical and modern music, opera and many other happenings, where you can enjoy the entertainment offered by international known artists. For those looking for the world known Sicilian cuisine, the town offers a wide choice of restaurants, trattorias and pizzerias, pastry-shops, bars, cafes, pubs, for any taste and budget. Nightlife offers a variety of possibilities. You can just enjoy strolling around Corso Umberto pedestrian area having an ice cream sitting at the bar in the plaza, while listening to live music, or enjoying a visit at the pub, or at the wine bar, or discothèque. If you just wish to enjoy the Mediterranean sea, there is a daily shuttle service to the various beaches of Taormina: the shuttle will take you down there and bring you back, leaving five minutes walking distance from the apartments. If you wish during your stay to 'stay fit' there is the possibility to play tennis, in a close-by sport centre, or jogg while discovering places and corners around the town, take great walks up and down hills or visit the Botanical Taormina Public Garden, also at a walking distance from the apartments, a great playground for kids too (a corner of the Garden is especially dedicated to them).
