The Sicily region

To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything...The things that enchant you cannot be counted." (J.W. Goethe, “Italian Journey”, 1873). From blackened lava fields to soft sandy coves, Sicily boasts wonderfully contrasting landscapes. This idyllic isle is a patchwork of rolling plains, sweet-smelling citrus groves, precipitous cliffs and flower-filled meadows. Like the scenery, Sicily’s heritage is also incredibly varied. Its strategic mid-Mediterranean location made it the coveted prize of many an empire and centuries of invasion by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, French and Spanish left behind indelible marks on the island’s cultural landscape. Holidays in Sicily are also about enjoying the island's passion for food and drink. Whatever you're doing, it'll feel even better paired with a glass of almond wine, homemade pizza or steaming espresso. Add a superb all-year round climate and the locals' irresistible zest and hospitality and you're sure of a memorable time here.

Taormina

Pearl of the Mediterranean, easily reachable by bus, taxis or with the help of a cable car located 15 minutes walk away. Taormina is like a treasure chest of history: walking along its main traffic-free street, Corso Umberto, and the maze of narrow streets and small beautiful squares, you will find theatres and gymnasiums from the Greek age, Odeon and baths from the Roman age, stunning buildings in which the Arab and the Norman cultures melt together in a memorable sense of beauty. Small shops selling local crafts, designer boutiques, romantic candlelit bars and sparkling restaurants, tucked away among the medieval streets of the old town, add to Taormina's charm. And if you're lucky enough to coincide your visit with the Taormina Art Festival in the summer, you'll be treated to a fantastic programme of international music, theatre, art, opera, dance and film. Taormina, perched high above the Ionian coast and commanding spectacular views of the sea below and Moint Etna, Europe's largest active volcano, is particularly renowned for its ancient Greek theatrre, but its pedestrianised centre, running between the medieval gates of Porta Messina and Porta Catania, contains also other remains from classical times, as well as several graceful churches and palazzi.

"A wonderful base for an unforgettable holiday"

The location of the apartment is unsurpassable, at the most entrancing place within the pedestrianised heart of this historic town, directly overlooking the baroque fountain in the Piazza del Duomo, with the cathedral immediately to the left. The apartment itself is a delight: comfortable, elegantly decorated , well furnished and equipped, with its two bedrooms, a living-room with its length of windows above the piazza, very adequate bathroom and a kitchen which if not of ballroom size has room for a small table to eat at although families and groups will do so at the large table in the living-room. Everything works as it should. The osener Viorica keeps the home spotlessly clean, and supplied with coffee, tea, sugar, mineral-water and fruit. She is very friendly, and helpful beyond the call of duty. Shops and amenities are immediately at hand, and a supermarket within 200 metres. It is a short stroll to Taormina's many beautiful sights and monuments, including the famous Greek theatre and the beautiful public gardens. The cable-car which floats one swiftly down to the beach is fifteen minutes' walk away. Sights further afield are easily rached by excellent public transport of th well-organised excursions. Yet one can also happily linger at the apartment's windows enjoying the goings-on, including occasional processions, in the piazza below. Having stayed here for a dozen days from late May this year, I eagerly returned for another spell after visiting other parts of Sicily.

"Steer well clear"

I think the advert grossly miss-represented the apartment. It is true that the location is as central as it gets. But it is not a flat with a sea view nor could it have slept 7. The advert stated has… More

"Excellent location, price, and agent, in peaceful suite - I can't wait to return!"

The suite was ideal in every way. It has a perfect location that cannot be beaten, a wonderful view right in front of the Piazza's fountain, and everything you need right there, in peace and quiet. It was spotlessly clean. Everything worked properly as it should (for example, hot water, electricity, proper heating, internet, etc). Everything was exactly as described in her ad, and it was a perfect time—no surprises. This is how finding a vacation apartment should be. Viorica was also very helpful, very kind, very friendly, and very patient—especially as I was a first-time using this site. And if I ever needed anything, she would show up immediately to help. I would certainly stay there again and strongly recommend her to everyone, and I can't wait to come back!

"Perfection!"

This is sheer perfection! My stay through most of June 2012 was an eagerly awaited returm return visit, for I first stayed at Duomo Apartment for a shorter break over the Easter period a few months earlier. The apartment itself is wonderful: elegant, comfortable and excellently furnished and equipped. Its location in the pedestrianised heart of the historic and atmospheric town of Taormina could not be bettered. All amenities – shops, bars and restaurants, banks, also a large supermarket – are very close at hand, and Taormina's famous sights and monuments, including the Greek Theatre, elegant churches and palazzi, and the beautiful public fgardens, are only a stroll away. It is a ten-minute walk to the cable-car directly down to the beach. A particular joy of this apartment is its light and airy living-room with windows facing directly out to the cathedral anad down to the charming square below, with its baroque fountain topped by a rearing centaur. This is a glorious vantage-point. The host is a model of courtesy, friendliness and hepfulness. She keeps the apartment impeccably clean, and as a bonus supplied with coffee, tea, sugar, biscuits and fruit for her guests to enjoy. Her efforts go well beyond the normal call of duty. Once one has stayed in this lovely and unbeatably situated apartment, one will never want to seek any alternative in Taormina. A stunning place for an unforgettable holiday!

"Steer Clear"

Apartment is lovely, good location but on my first morning I was awoken by the police and had to escort them to the police to make a statement, stating who I was, what I was doing there, how I found the apartment, how did I lease it,what internet site, when I arrived, where I was from, leave a photocopy of my friends and my passport. All very unpleasant. My understanding is that the apartment is being sublet. Anyway to be quite honest, it doesn't matter what is going on there but there has been a complaint made by a local business man and he has complained the apartment to the police. So people arriving to the apartment are being watched. I understand that this reads like a bad film script and believe me when I say, You couldn't make up this story. Please steer clear. Two of us spent a very stressful 5 hours at the police station.

As the proprietor of Duomo Apartment I am deeply pained by this review, and its injustice. After the opening four words, 'Apartment lovely, good location' this is not a review of the home and the services I offer guests, but an account of an episode these young women had with the police. They do not know Italian, and indeed did not understand 'what was going on'. The complainant they refer to is not a 'local businessman', but simply the neighbour on the floor below the apartment. The main reason certainly his jealousy for many of our guests and their well-being, their happiness and probably in this case a little noise to an hour late than so be it, and even show that the girls were good and he liked where they were and that makes me so much pleasure. The police conducted an identity check, which is not abnormal in a tourist resort such as Taormina, and happens to the guests of five-star hotels. The review grossly exaggerates the time these girls spent at the police station, by calling it '5 hours'. It was in fact at most one hour, which I know because they telephoned me and I went myself to the police station to discover what was going on. Subsequently, although none of what these young women had experienced was in any way my fault, they asked me for a discount of 190 euros, and I immediately agreed to. They do not mention this in their 'review'. Obviously, what happened had nothing to do with myself, or the quality of the apartment. I am particularly distressed that by writing 'people arriving to the apartment are being watched', the review implies that this is an ongoing problem. It is not. No other guest of mine, before or since, has incurred a police identity check. This was an isolated occurrence. I do everything to welcome guests to this beautiful apartment, and to help them to have a wonderful holiday. Before and since these young Irishwomen, I have had guests who have loved the apartment, and who have returned, or who intend to do so, for a second holiday at Duomo Apartment.'
