Enquire nowThe Sicily region
The Greek cities of Sicily as Selinunte, Segesta, Syracuse, were among the most beautiful of the Hellenic world. Visit the magnificent Greek Theatre of TAORMINA, the archaeological Roman city of Tindari, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento or watch a show in summer grand Greek Theatre of Syracuse is an authentic diving in the distant past Hellenic. And the same happens in Sicily, with many other epochs and civilizations, from Spanish to French. Sicily is a book of history and art history, and cultures of the greatest civilizations of all time. An island with an exuberant nature, spine-tingling views and a delicious and varied cuisine of Mediterranean flavors and aromas unforgettable. Sicilian towns are Messina, TAORMINA, Catania, Siracusa, Caltanissetta, Enna, Ragusa, Trapani, Palermo, Agrigento and Noto.
Sicily guard treasures of Magna Graecia, so close to Africa, the Iberian Peninsula and East and occupies a strategic position in terms of military and commercial. Pioneered by Phoenicians, by the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, built by the Byzantines ... So much mixture, what culture, what beauty!
Flavors that run the world and perfume tables? Spectacular views, beautiful beaches, scenery, ruins, alleys, stairwells, cliffs, and the highest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna! Sicily is a spectacle!
It is no coincidence, is the desired goal by tourists from all over the world!
If you want to make the most of it in this region, we strongly recommend that you rent a car in Sicily. Taxi Services are very expensive although where usage is necessary or convenient to you; please ensure that you get an idea of the cost of the journey before you travel.
Here you will find local bus services and you must purchase a fare ticket, which are sold at Newsagents, tobacco vendors and even some bars. A ticket will cost approximately one euro each and they are valid for 60-90 minutes from the time they are stamped. When you board the bus you must ensure to stamp your ticket in the machine provided.
Also Eating out in Sicily is relatively cheap when compared to other regions of Italy. Prices and portions will vary according to the location, size and type of establishment, though portions are usually large and the service is friendly and helpful.
Please be aware that it is often difficult to find someone who speaks English and often the menu is difficult to translate as it refers to local foods and dishes. So remember to take your dictionary with you to assist with ordering and understanding the menu.
Most Restaurants will not include service in their bill and therefore it is usual to leave a tip. Exact opening hours vary greatly from place to place. Generally in Sicily you will find that almost everything closes between 1pm and 4pm apart from a few restaurants and shops. Supermarkets close at 8pm and most pharmacies are closed at night except for the night-service pharmacies, which accommodate emergencies.
In general principle archeological sites are open from 9-12am and 4-7pm Monday - Friday and 9am - 12am Saturday (Summer hours may be longer). Museums are open from 9-1 Tuesday - Saturday and some weekday afternoons. Most shops close on a Monday morning and all day on Sunday but open 9am-1pm and 4pm-7.30 pm on other days including Saturdays. Banks are usually open Monday to Friday 08.30 - 13.20 14.45 - 15.45 and are closed Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.
Restaurants such as pizzerias open evenings from around 8pm Tuesday through Saturday and some are closed Sundays and Mondays. Some restaurants open for lunch from around 12.30 or 1pm but don’t expect to find pizza served at lunchtime as many restaurants only serve pizza in the evening.
The Taormina / Savoca area
The Taormina area also includes the beautiful and historic Valle d'Agro where all close there are the sea villages of S.Teresa di Riva, S. Alessio Siculo, Furci Siculo, Roccalumera and the hilltop villages of Savoca, Forza D'Agro, Casalvecchio and other small ancient medieval villages,
About Savoca, there are at least three excellent reasons, apart from the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning views over the sea from the piazza. First, the Godfather connection.
The village was chosen to stand in for the less-photogenic Corleone: also off-limits because the real Mafia were none to keen on Coppola's project. When Michael and his two companions are walking in the hills, they see this picturesque village in the distance - which I think is actually nearby Forza d' Agrò - and one them remarks "Corleone".
But later, after Michael's wedding, they do walk down from the church in Savoca to Vitelli's Bar on the piazza for the reception. The table where he sat earlier to ask the padrone for the hand of his delightful daughter Apollonia is still there, and you can sit at it to sample the famous granita di limone (which is the second reason for making the journey to Savoca).
The third reason for a visit is the Convent of the Frati Minori Cappuccini, which you will have passed on the road up to the town - or more precisely, the Catacomb which lies beneath. You pay a small sum to the custodian, and then pass through a trapdoor, down a rickety wooden ladder into the crypt. Unless you've seen the similar sight at the Cappuccini in Palermo, nothing can prepare you for what you are about to see. Around the wall in glass cases or coffins are the corpses of Savoca's worthies, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Most are in a standing posture, and still wearing the appropriate dress for their professions in life.
Few horror films could compare with the grisly reality of sharing a crypt with 35 or so decayed corpses, some 300 years old. The fact that some have been daubed with green paint by vandals only adds to the effect. Having an ancestor here is a source of great local pride.
Visit the Catacomb, and see the for yourself (if you dare!). Definitely not for the squeamish!

This villa was a real find, a private villa set on a ridge above the historic town of Savoca, with views to the sea from one side and views of a smoking Mount Etna from the pool! This villa feels like a real family home feel, not a boxy new build on an estate as so many Med rental villas can be. There is even best china in the sideboard, and liquers in the wine rack! The villa has lots of spaces to relax in, and due to an unexpected spell of hot weather at the end of September, we spent much of the time in either the shady garden or the sea-facing terrace, soaking up the views. The efficient and effective air con in the bedrooms helped too. The Sky tv and wi-fi is a real boon, and apart from the broadband service taking the odd siesta some afternoons, it worked a treat. The annex kitchen a real bonus for night-time cooking when you don't want to heat up the main villa, and there is even a wood fired oven if you want to cook pizzas, plus two BBQs, one in the garden and a brick build BBQ at the poolside. We ate in a lot, and the local supermarket had a superb butcher and delicatessan, so there were always plenty of fresh, local ingredients to use. Paulo the owner is so eager to please, and really wants you to enjoy your stay. Almost daily, he pops his head round to check you are OK, usually bearing gifts of local pastries or bread or whatever he has found that looks good on his way up to the villa! He works from an annex at the side of the villa, but since this faces the drive, you only really notice it when you park the car. During our stay, apparently, his teenage kids came up a couple of times, and he does stay late, but we can honestly say we really didn't see him (or hear him) beyond the 'official' visits and he is very, very careful to respect your privacy. Savoca is a fascinating place, with narrow streets winding across ridges to historic churches and ruined castles, and a morbidly fascinating catacomb of mummified local gentry! (We visited on Saturday morning and the girl on the door was a mine of information - she's not there all week.). It does fill with coach parties of cruise ship tourists all eager to see the "Godfather" Bar Vitelli, but the joy of the villa's location is you can simply walk into town once the crowds have gone! Response: Lovely Guests, thank you very much for your beautiful testimony of VillaLittleParadise about the efficiency of the Villa and about our great care to ensure total privacy and exclusive private possession of all the rooms in the property to our Guests. For us it is very important that our Guests enjoy their stay the best! We hope to see you soon, a warm greeting, Paolo&Family |
