The Sicily region
Sicily is a unique place full of art, archaeology, history, folklore and breathtaking scenery. In addition, it is home to Heavenly beaches, majestic mountains and Europe's greatest natural wonder, Mount Etna. Each scenic region offers something different plus … the food, wines and shops are wonderful!
Some of the most popular places to visit outside Taormina, are: Syracuse, Agrigento, Aeolian Islands, Nebrodi Mountains, Mount Etna, The Baroque South East (Noto, Modica, Ragusa), Piazza Armerina (The Roman Villa Casale), and Caltagirone (ceramics). We also suggest Catania’s fish market and Via Etnea, where you can find the Cathedral, many shops and an attractive Public Garden "Villa Bellini".
For general sightseeing, we recommend the periods October through December and March through June. For skiing on Mount Etna, late January and early February are best. If you're a dedicated vacationer who can't get enough sunshine and beaches, we suggest June through September. Winter is a good time to come to Sicily if the focus of your visit is history and culture.
This hillside town overlooking the Ionian coast is Sicily's most famous resort, full of restaurants and shops, with wonderful nearby beaches. The Taormina Film Festival is held every year in July.
Its historical side is ubiquitous. The Greek amphitheatre, with its famous panoramic view of Mount Etna and the coast, holds concerts, operas and plays, medieval walls enclose the town's stone streets.
A visit to Etna (40km) and surroundings is a day-long excursion, Alcantara Gorge (20km) is also appealing to nature lovers. Visit the village of Savoca (14km), so small, so typical, so "not for tourists", where the Godfather film was filmed. While there, visit the “The Savoca Mummies” preserved in an 18th century subterranean chamber. See Naxos archaeological site (6km), the earliest Greek colony in Sicily, or just enjoy wandering around the narrow streets of Taormina enjoying the colourful balconies, interesting shops, outdoor cafes and delicious ice-cream. The public garden is also fascinating and not to be missed, here you can find a play area for small children.
Taormina has two main beaches “Isola Bella” and “Mazzarò” which offer scuba diving, boat excursions, private lidos and public areas. Boats are available for hire from nearby Giardini port (4km).
