About the home

This lovely budget cottage is in beautiful peaceful surroundings, and is well equipped for every need, with kitchen, small sitting area with sat tv, bathroom with shower, and a large terrace with garden furniture and barbecue. Sleeps 4 and is perfect for walking, relaxing and enjoying the Sicilian countryside.

Situated in the green Alcantara valley, surrounded by fields and mountains. From the valley magnificent view of the always smoking mount Etna. Just 2,5 km away from the quiet rural village Francavilla di Sicilia with restaurants, bars and supermarkets. The nearest beach is Giadini Naxos, at 15 minute drive.

The house inside is small, simple furnished but well established and clean. Ideal place for those couples looking for a budget rental but in the same time being in a comfortable house with all the needs.

Please mind if you have little children, that the bedroom with the two single beds is in a outbuilding next to the main entrance, shown on picture 6!

The Sicily region

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean sea and....the place where the mountains meet the sea. Sicilia, the island in the sun, is home to Heavenly beaches, majestic mountains and Europe's greatest natural wonder, mount Etna. Sicily's coasts are gold with orange and lemon orchards. A place where time and tradition have been forged, timeless beauty in eclectic diversity: Europe, Africa and Asia in one magical moment...

Food and wine are among Sicily's main attractions. The climate in Sicily is known as “Mediterranean” which means that the summers are hot and dry and the winters are mild with light rainfall.The summer season can often seem long, as Spring and Autumn offer a continuation of the warm temperatures and long hours of sunlight.

Once you've been there you no doubt agree… and just to reinforce the point, here are some unusual facts about Sicily that you might not yet be familiar with:

•Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean with 600 miles of coastline and yet it is still somewhat undeveloped for tourism. It takes roughly 3 ½ hours to cross the main island from east to west and 2 ½ from north to south.
•Sicily might be like another world but it's actually only three kilometers from the Italian mainland across the Straits of Messina.
•People in Sicily consider themselves Sicilians first and Italians second.
•About 70 percent of people in Sicily actually speak Sicilian not Italian. In fact Sicilian is so different from Italian that even though it is referred to as a dialect, it could be a language in its own right.
•Who hasn't lived in Sicily? The Arabs, Normans, Byzantines, Greeks, Romans and Spanish - you name it they've all been here.
•One of the world's most famous mathematicians, Archimedes, was born in Sicily.
•The Republican movement to unite Italy started in Sicily.
•The majority of Italian-American immigrants hailed from the south – Naples and beyond into Sicily.
•The term “mafia” originated in Sicily and this is indeed home to the infamous and illicit Mafia criminal organization. However another kind of “mafia” exists in Sicily and that is mafia culture – or a system of bribes and kickbacks by which government and business often function.
•Sicily is home to two out of three of Italy's active volcanoes: Stromboli and Etna. The other volcano in Italy is Vesuvius near Naples. Mt Etna is also the tallest volcano in Europe and about 25 percent of the Sicilian population live on its slopes.
•Italy is considered to have the biggest "black economy" in Western Europe, much of this thanks to goings on in Sicily. Economically, Sicily is one of Italy's poorest areas with an average wage about half of that in the north. The official unemployment is double the national average and sits around 20 percent.
•The Allies used Sicily during WWII as a base to begin the Allied Invasion in 1943 which finally led to the end of Benito Mussolini's reign in the country.
•Syracuse was once the largest ancient Greek city in the world.

The Taormina / Francavilla di Sicilia area

Casa del Sole is immersed in the Alcantara Valley, at 200 mt from the well known Alcantara Gorge, a true oasis between Mount Etna and Taormina.

Visit the spectacular gorges, created by the erosion and cooling of the lava, flowing from a side crater of Mount Etna. There are several good restaurants in the surroundings, where you can taste the authentic and excellent Sicilian cuisine and wine. From the cottage it is 10 minutes drive to the sandy beach of Giardini Naxos.

“Disappointing” We rented Casa La Luna (called "Casa Patrizia" in the inserat of FeWo direct at that time, and "Casa Martina" later) from 11.11. to 16.11.2011, and made a deposit. We were told to... more Response: Dear Tripadvisor please verify the reviews well before you publish them!!

“excellent location for a quiet holiday” Very nice farmhouse. All tools available. Bbq, pool, garden, etc. Breakfast good. Nice quiet location yet within 30minutes drive from everything- taormina, etna birds, etc and just in front of gole alcantara. Highly recommended.

“HOLIDAY MAKER BEWARE - DO NOT BOOK THIS RENTAL” Arrived to find that the property was not available - the agent offered us a completely unsuitable alternative (dirty, inaccessible, dark, damp, overgrown, etc.). We spent over £500 finding a hotel at short notice, then hired from a different agent. We still await the return of our deposit as the agent is refusing to communicate with us. The photos are completely misleading as they are a mixture of several properties. You have been warned. Response: We are very disappointed to read a review like this for our rental. Someone unfortunately confused our house with an other. We rent holiday rentals for more than 6 years and therefore absolutely guarantee service and quality to our guests.

“Nice house with great pool and very helpful hirer” We passed a very nice trip to Sicily this summer. The house Casa Martina is located in a calm neighbourhood, about 20 minutes from the beautiful beaches of Giardini Naxos. Around 200 m from the house is the famous Gole dell Alcantara, the canyon of Alcantara. A car is absolutely necessary for this location. An orchard with lemon, fig and plum trees surrounds the house and its pool is located in the agreeable shadow of the trees. A large terrace is existent. The interior of the house is simple but sufficient. Who stays in the house when it is hot outside and the sun is shining every day? We found everything we needed in the kitchen and everything in the house worked very well. To be highlighted is the amicability of the hirer. Mr. Burrogano was so nice to meet us at the airport and to bring us to the near supermarket on our first day and to the Europcar station where we could only get our car two days after arrival in Italy. He welcomed us with a plate of delicious Antipasti, fresh bread and wine at the house and visited us often to clean the pool or to bring us fresh bed linen or new sun loungers.
