The Penang Island region

Penang Island

Situated along the north-western coast of the peninsula, Penang is Malaysia’s only “island state”. Locals are fondly known as Penangites, many of whom will proudly tell you that the state comprising a population of approximately 1.5 million, is a close-knit community of diverse ethnicities, cultures and dialects.

One of Malaysia’s premier holiday destinations, the 285km2 island is separated from Seberang Prai (formerly Province Wellesley) – a hinterland of 737km2 on the mainland, by a narrow 3km channel.

You can either cross the channel via the iconic Penang Bridge or by the ferry – the latter being a “must experience” simply because it is synonymous with holidaying here. Soon, visitors will have the option of using the new Second Penang Bridge which is expected to be completed in 2011.

The Weather

Sunny weather beckons all year round (well, almost!). Except for the monsoon months from August to October, it is bright and cheerful in Penang. However, travellers not used to Asia’s hot and humid climate should pack a cap, water bottle and cool pair of shades when out exploring!

Tanjung Tokong

A fascinating fusion of the East and West, Penang embraces modernity while retaining its traditions and old world charm. These are reflected in its harmonious multiracial populace and well-preserved heritage buildings which led to George Town being accorded a listing as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site recently. Long regarded as the food capital of Malaysia, Penang also entices visitors with its beautiful coasts and scrumptious cuisines.

While soaking in the sun at one of the many beautiful beaches is a must, visitors must bring along their most comfortable walking shoes because there is a whole new world to be explored in the quaint nooks and crannies of George Town. Offering the best of Asia, Penang 's sights and sounds reflect the colourful heritage of her many races and the pride of her people. Be it lush tropical gardens or ornately designed temples and unique heritage buildings, Penang will give you a glimpse into a world where nature, tradition and history blend into a rich cultural tapestry.

Penang gourmet ranges from street food to fine dining but her myriad of flavours are definitely unique to the island state. With each race offering their own traditional fare, foodies will be spoilt for choice. Although every culture has their signature dishes, they are also influenced by other cooking styles and have managed to come up with their own special creations that represent a beautiful blend of tastes and spices.

In Penang , the journey never ends and the excitement never stops. There is so much to do here, we'd recommend at least a two-week stay to really experience the culture and all that this beautiful paradise has to offer. Live like a local and see what laid back Penangites love to indulge in - travel in trishaws and shop at the many quaint night markets. Be adventurous and explore

"Great Holiday"

We had a fabulous holiday around the New Year. Trevor was pleasant to communicate with and Patricia was very to prompt and helpful with the check-in/out.The location is great, easy access to explore the beautiful island. The apartment is nice, all you need is there, except a hairdryer. The pool area was our favorite, most of the time we got it to ourselves. The gym is ok. We loved the Marina, beautiful view and some good restaurants. We quite enjoyed the New Year's eve fireworks and the bands. We hope to return soon. M&J

"Beautiful Place Excellent Value"

We stayed here for 10 days with two small children 2yrs & 4yrs from the UK. The agent Harris was very pleasant & extremely helpful when we had a couple of things needing attention. Trevor also kept great communication with us who was out of the country-thank you. The apartment is stunning, large & well equipped with everything you need for a fabulous holiday even had a high chair & travel cot. The pool is beautiful which is also on the same level. Security is brilliant key cards to get into lifts, doors etc. Great restaurants & shops downstairs highly recommend the fish & chips place, Italian & Papa Rich places shame we didn't try everywhere else. I would highly recommend this place, thank you for a lovely stay, regards Scott & Samantha
