Home description
This comfortable house (in excess of 200 sq m/1600 sq feet) is situated in a sizeable, fully enclosed private garden close to the market town of Talmont Saint Hilaire and near the pretty village of Port Bourgenay and within easy reach of Les Sables d'Olonne. It is around an hour from Nantes airport and three and a half hours from St Malo (five hours to Cherbourg).
The house itself boasts 2 double bedrooms and 2 Twins and 2 bathrooms, a kitchen/breakfast room, a large lounge/dining room, a sun room and a double garage. The bedrooms are split two on each floor, each with a bathroom, which means that the house is ideal for two families wishing to share.
In addition, the kitchen is fully equipped with all life's little necessities and includes a gas hob, an electric convection oven and grill, microwave, coffee machine, dishwasher, washing machine, etc. There is also a TV, DVD player, SKY and CD/Radio Hifi to make this feel like a home from home.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vendee region
Around 3 and a half hours drive from St Malo, Talmont Saint Hilaire is a small market town that is steeped in history and boasts a castle right in it's centre which was once home to Richard the Lionheart. During the season the Castle boasts a number of activities for children including jousting, dressing up in period costume as well as the usual tours.
The area is known as the sunshine coast and boasts a micro-climate with sunshine levels not far below the south of France. The temperatures on the long warm sunny days of July and August along the Atlantic coast average around 25 degrees, and at the height of summer temperatures above 30 degrees are the norm rather than the exception, meaning you and the lifeguards get a great tan in between your dips in the warm shallow beach waters.
Talmont St Hilaire / Port Bourgenay area
There are many beautiful beaches in the area, and the one nearest the house, Plage du Veillon, is no exception. Also nearby is the smart seaside resort of Les Sables d'Olonne. It is known for shopping, sailing, windsurfing and fishing and its beach has been voted the best in Europe and is famous for its huge sandy expanse. There are many good restaurants in the area and the activities available are almost too many to list but include golf, horse riding, sailing, walking amongst the forests and dramatic coastline, cycling, etc.
If you take a look at our own web site you will see some of the activities on offer, two worth a mention here are:
La Venise Verte - The reclaimed lands of the 'Marais Poitevin' (Green Venice) are protected wetlands, criss-crossed with drainage canals and abounding with protected fauna and bird-life. You can explore this astonishing area on foot, on a bike or by hiring a boat.
The Indian Forest - If I describe it is as a huge adventure playground I am not doing it justice, it offers high wire challenges, all manner of bouncy castles etc, paintball, pony rides etc. Definitely somewhere for those needing to burn off some energy.

Arrival by Air
The Vendee is well served by both budget and scheduled airlines, be aware though that some operators don't start serving the area till May which can mean if you are looking a long way ahead that you cannot see or book the route. The nearest airports serving the Vendée are at La Rochelle (approximately an hour and a half) and Nantes (just over an hour).
La Rochelle is served from the UK by www.easyjet.com from Bristol and Luton and by www.flybe.com from Birmingham and Southampton.
Nantes is served by www.britishairways.com and www.AirFrance.co.uk from Gatwick. www.ryanair.com now services Nantes from Stanstead and East Midlands airport.
Other nearby airports include Poitiers and Tours (served by low cost airlines from the UK) but both are a little further away.
Car Hire is available from www.Hertz.com whose advance rates are not too bad, www.Avis.com, www.e-sixt.com and www.Eurocar.com who we have found very reliable.
Arrival by Ferry
There are three ferry ports close to the Vendee:
St Malo (300km) – From Portsmouth on www.brittany-ferries.co.uk Caen (400km) From Portsmouth on www.brittany-ferries.co.uk (Including a fast service which starts at Easter). Cherbourg (460km) From Portsmouth and Poole on www.brittany-ferries.co.uk (Including a fast service which starts at Easter).
If you want to make a longer trip of it then Dover to Calais is an option with numerous companies including www.speedferries.co.uk serving the route, we'd advise stopping at a small hotel or B&B for the night to break up the journey.
