Enquire nowThe North Wales / Snowdonia/Gwynedd region
Close to The Snowdonia National Park, Dolgoch Falls is ideally situated for whatever type of holiday you want. Whatever you're into: fishing, surfing, kite boarding, sailing, mountain biking, bird watching, painting, landscape photography or horse riding, there are endless scenic places to explore.
This region of Wales is without doubt a 'hidden gem' with some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain. This is a walker's paradise with Cader Idris just a few minutes drive away! Snowdon is only 60 minutes away and the beautiful Coed Y Brenin Forest, with miles of mountain bike & walking tracks is just 30 minutes drive.
Don't worry if you're not the active type, the flat & effortless Mawddach Trail, featured in Julia Bradbury's 'Great Railway Walks' program, is accessible to everyone and takes you on a journey along one of the UK's most spectacular estuaries, brimming with wildlife.
There are miles of beautiful unspoilt sandy beaches to laze upon, as well as many local attractions such as the Talyllyn Narrow Gauge Railway, which steams from Tywyn up to the mystical Dolgoch Falls. Just a few miles around the stunning Talyllyn Lake is the world renowned 'Centre For Alternative Technology' or (CAT) which is a fascinating place to visit and learn. Close to CAT is The Corris Craft Centre and King Arthurs Labyrinth, another 'must-visit' place.
Wildlife:
The area is rich in rare bird species including peregrine falcons, red kites and buzzards. There are also RSPB reserves nearby where you can go and observe red kite, feed badgers and seek out the numerous varieties of butterfly native to the region.
Port Meirion
Picturesque village with Italian-style buildings and where the 1960's television drama 'The Prisoner' was filmed.
The Tal y Llyn / Dolgoch area
The Tywyn / Bryncrug area
Just 10 minutes drive away is Tywyn. Tywyn has a sunny west-facing 'Blue Flag' sandy beach. Don't miss the spectacular sunsets over the bay. From early Spring through till Autumn, dolphins and porpoise can be spotted close to the shore, an amazing sight to see! Its not unusual to see them on a daily basis in pods of up to 20. Tywyn is possibly the only place on the West Coast where you can park for FREE virtually right on the beach. There is level access to the town where there are supermarkets, shops, cafes, banks, a post office, cinema, health centre, cottage hospital, several churches, leisure centre and an indoor swimming pool. Just 5 minutes drive is the picturesque harbour village of Aberdovey, with the famous Aberdovey Golf Course plus several good restaurants & pubs.
For watersport enthusiasts and visitors with families, uncrowded, sweeping, sandy beaches can be found in Tywyn and Aberdovey just a few minutes' drive from the cottage. Tywyn is a focal point for surfers & kayakers. Aberdovey is a well known wind surfing & sailing centre. Jet skiers are tolerated in both resorts!! Fishing trips can be arranged in Tywyn & Aberdovey all year round.
This area is full of history dating back to pre-historic times. Just get off the slightly beaten track on the dozens of public footpaths and you will come across standing stones, stone circles, abandoned farmhouses, castles & ancient churches, not to mention the pre-historic peat cuttings that can often be seen at low tide on Tywyn beach.
Places within a just few miles of Dolgoch Falls Cottages NOT TO MISS:
Aberdovey, lovely old fishing village, GOLF & SAILING haven, with many good restaurants, pubs & coffee shops.
St Cadvans Church in Tywyn dating back 1500 years with the Cadvan Stones, which are apparently the oldest known inscriptions of the Welsh language.
Dolgoch Falls, spectacular waterfalls and woodland walk, look out for fairies and goblins!
Cregennan Lake near Arthog, stunning location, with views of the Mawddach Estuary.
The Barmouth Bridge, build by Brunel. You must walk over it and enjoy the Mawddach, then explore Barmouth, with excellent beaches and the harbour. There are good shops, numerous coffee shops & pubs.
Cader Idris & Llyn Cau, most walkers agree is more scenic than Snowdon.
Cader Idris:
Dotted with lakes and part of the Berwyn mountain range, the Cader Idris commands some unrivalled views and attracts walkers from all over the world. En-route to the summit (highest point 2,927 feet - approximately 5 hours' walk), you will come across arctic-alpine plant life, heather and wild bird species. Truly majestic!
The Bearded Lake above Aberdovey. Mystical place of legends, with amazing view of the Dovey Estuary.
The Dysynni River & reed beds. A wild life haven for, geese, ducks and herons. Fishing with a permit.
Bird Rock. 500 years ago the sea came up to the rock, but the Cormorant still breed here. Also, look out for the ruined Iron Age fort near the top of the rock.
Tal-y-llyn Lake, just beautiful !
