The Taipei region
Taipei is the political, economic, and cultural centre of Taiwan. There is the National Palace Museum, which has one of the largest collections of Chinese artefacts and artworks in the world. Considered to be a global city, Taipei is part of a major industrial area. Railways, high speed rail, highways, airports, and bus lines connect Taipei with all parts of the island. The city is served by two airports - Taipei Songshan and Taiwan Taoyuan
Taipei has a four-season, monsoon-influenced, humid subtropical climate. Summers are very hot, humid, and accompanied by occasional heavy rainstorms and typhoons, while winters are short and mild.
Due to Taiwan's location in the Pacific Ocean, it is affected by the Pacific typhoon season, which occurs between June and October.
Historically, Taipei has always been a place where cultures collide and coalesce. The earliest archaeological evidence of human presence in Taipei was found in the Yuanshan Prehistoric Site (B.C. 5000) and the Zhishanyan Prehistoric Site (B.C. 1000-200). The two sites confirm the early human presence in Taipei and Taipei's past as a lake. Later, the Ketagalan group belonging to the Pingpu ("Plains") aboriginal tribes began to thrive in areas such as Danshui, Beitou and Bali.
The Spanish arrived in Danshui from Keelung and built Fort Provintia (now known as the Hongmao Fort, or "red-topped tower" (red hair castle?). Shortly after, the Dutch invaded south Taiwan and fought for control of the island with Ming Dynasty general Koxinga, who was then stationed in Tainan. After defeating Koxinga’s forces, the Qing government assumed total control of Taiwan.
Southern Chinese immigrants from Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, and Canton began to arrive in Mengjia, then Taiwan's largest port, in search of arable land. They fought constantly with the Pingpu tribe as well as among themselves for territory. These early immigrants built houses and temples that reflected a number of regional architectural styles.
Construction of Taipei City was completed in the late 19th century during Emperor Guangxu's reign. The historical city gates that we see today were constructed during this period.
Taiwan became a Japanese colony in 1895, after China lost the First Sino-Japanese War. Taiwan remained a Japanese colony until the end of WWII, when the mainland Chinese Nationalist government took over. The influx of Nationalist troops and personnel brought with them mainland Chinese culture to Taiwanese society.
In recent years, increased immigration from Southeast Asia has further contributed to Taipei's ever more diversified cultural climate.

"Has everything you want and more"
We stayed here for 5 nights over Christmas and the apartment was fantastic. We were met by Alex who showed us round and explained everything and answered our questions. The apartment was so well fitted out with everything you could need.... There was even a Christmas tree for us. The metro stop is a couple of minutes and you are in Taipei in about 15 minutes. A 10 minute walk and there are shops and restaurants so everything you need is so close by.

"Convenient & Budget Stay"
The owner is helpful in arranging the transfer and transport to places we want to go. A convenient place to stay as walking distance to mrt station. Nearby there are convenience stores and also food stalls for our own breakfast. This is a nice and cosy place to stay together for 6 people. The only negative is the dark staircase which we need to carry our own luggage up to and from the 2nd storey.

"Nice Condo for family of five"
This condo is a nicely decorated place for my family of five, including my dad, sister, hubby and 7 year old kid. The three bedroom layout worked out great for us. It is an older condo with all necessities furnished in an older part of Taipei away from the crowds. It worked out for us because we rented a car with a driver, so transportation was not a concern. However, the appliances need some help.

"My entire family and I give Alex and the Ouinn Guesthouse 2 thumbs up."
I’m really glad I found the Ouinn Guesthouse to accomodate my family of 5 over the new years. Hotels would’ve been too expensive and crashing with local family in Taipei would’ve been too intrusive for our 5 night visit. Alex was incredibly responsive over email to all my questions and concerns before check-in. Local family in Taipei came to meet us the day we arrived and were impressed with the cleanliness, apartment furnishings, and amenities. Cable TV, WiFi, washing machine, and a great location for taxi drop-offs or taking the subway! Thank you, Alex, for hosting my family from California, and I definitely recommend staying here in the near future!

"Just Like a Second Home"
Thank you Alex. Your place is very comfortable with a bus stop downstairs and the subway just a few minutes walk away. Did I mention that there is a breakfast joint with an impressive menu at the shop below the apartment. Back to our apartment, it has everything a home has. Rice cooker, ironing board and iron, washing machine with detergent and fabric softener and other amenities. Also included and this was totally unexpected were cup noodles, different types of tea and coffee, two big bottles of mineral water, Milo sachets and toiletry basics like toothbrushes, shower caps and razors. The only minor drawback are the two flights of stairs to the apartment My friends and I totally enjoyed our short visit to Taipei and we have plans for more future visits and Ouiinn, you'll see us again. :-)

Thanks Alex for your help, flexibility and kindness. The appartment is really nice, clean and very convenient. Metro is pretty close and stores just at the corner. What could be better?

Friendly owner. Clean and comfortable. Easy access to public transportation (MRT and public bus).

Found this apartment last minute around 3 weeks before my planned arrival after my other booking was cancelled. Luckily the apartment was available. Alex, the owner, was very helpful and answered all my queries by email and was attentive to details. My friends and I had an enjoyable stay in the apartment and will definitely be staying here again when we visit Taipei again. One thing to note is that there is no lift to go up to the second floor where the apartment is. Therefore, it is not recommended for guests who may have diffuculty climbing stairs. The exterior or the building may be old, but the interior is exactly what you pay for.
