Home description

Lovely apartment on the first floor, ideal for a couple with two children or for friends, located in the historical centre of Syracuse, on the island of Ortigia, close to the Castello Maniace and 2mn walk from the Piazza Duomo.

The apartment enjoys a splendid sea view at 10mt. From the apartment you can admire on one side the whole Gulf and on the other the entire Ionian Sea Coast.

You have a beach access 3mn walk from the apartment (rocks), every morning you can go to the famous daily market of Ortigia, opened between 7am and 1pm, to buy some ricotta, aubergines, Sicilian wine etc.

Restaurants and shops are also very closed to the apartment. We also provide for a warm welcome in English and, on request, demonstrations of Sicilian cooking at a Sicilian home!

The Sicily region

Once one of the finest and largest of all Greek cities Syracuse (founded 733 BC) is now one of the most attractive towns in Sicily.

The names of the five districts of the ancient Greek city still survive in the five areas of modern Syracuse: Ortigia, Acradina, Neapolis, Tyche and Epipolis. Ortigia, the earliest Greek settlement and the location of the Mediterranean centre building, is an island, connected to the mainland by bridge and ringed with a series of ancient city walls which date to the Greek Period and which once held the war machines designed by Archimedes to defend the city against the Roman attack of 212 BC. The most important ancient monuments are to be found in the in Archaeological park (covering about 240,000 square metres) in the Neapolis area of Syracuse.

This area, which took shape in the 5th century BC, is comprised by the largest alter in the Greek world, a monumental theatre, a series of cavernous prisons – in which the unfortunates of the failed Athenian expedition to Sicily of 413BC were held and which was later named by Caravaggio as the ‘ear of Dionysus’ – and, further back, an elliptical Roman Amphitheatre (from the Augustan period) which is the third largest in Italy.

Syracuse / Ortigia area

The apartment is located on the island of Ortigia, the historical centre of Syracuse, at the very end of the island, in a peaceful area, 10mt from the sea.

It is an ideal place to visit the baroque balconies of Ortigia, to organise trips to the famous baroque city of Noto (30km from Siracusa, 20mn by car with the motorway), to Ragusa (1hour and a half by car), the splendid natural reserve of Vendicari (45 mn by car).

Should you come between the end of May and June, you will have the opportunity to see the traditional ancient greek plays in the ancient Greek Theatre of Siracusa! You can visit the famous archaeological park of Siracusa with the Greek theatre and the Roman theatre.

How to get there

The international airport of Catania Fontanarossa is the closest airport, it is about 50mn drive from Syracuse (about 60km). You have direct flights from London and Paris, for instance with Air Malta and Meridiana.
At the airport, you can rent a car (there are many companies, we particularly recommend Budget which generally proposes good prices) or, upon previous request, we can order a taxi for you for 60/70 euros.

If you arrive from the airport of Palermo, you need to rent a car and drive for about 3 hours (by the motorway).
