The Swiss Alps / Valais/Swiss Alps region
Despite having a long history as a tourist resort Champery has managed to retain its village characteristics. The Portes du Soleil area has something to offer everyone all year round.
In winter there is direct access to the slopes immediatly above the village which link to the vast ski area with 286 ski runs spread over 650 km of piste to the Swiss villages of Champoussin, Morgins and the French resorts of Avoriaz, Chatel and Morzine. You can go wherever your mood and the snow takes you. Depending on your skiing standard there is usually more than 1 way to get to your destination, so mixed ability groups can easily meet up for lunch. If you are doing the circuit round there are some phenomenal picnic spots which, on a clear day, provide superb views of Lake Geneva / Leman.
In summer there are 800 Km of well marked walking trails across the area for all levels of ability and fitness. You might choose a gentle stroll along the valley floor or a more ambitious 40 km hiking circuit staying in mountain huts. The 660Km of biking trails can be accessed via the many lifts that remain open throughout the year.
Other activites include bird watching, canyoning, climbing, or simply "people watching" on the terrace of a local cafe. The weather is generally mild until early November so Champery makes an ideal venue for an autumn break.
Montreux and Lake Geneva are half an hour away, Lausanne 1 hour and Geneva 1.5 hours away.
Swiss Portes du Soleil / Champery area
For skiers, the skiing on the Swiss side is mainly red and blue runs with a few notable exceptions. From the top of the cable car above the village (journey takes about 8 minutes) you wil have your skis on and need not take them off until the first hot chocolate stop. You can either stay in the Champéry and Le Crosets sector or explore the slopes above the traditional villages of Champoussin or Morgins. For 2008/9 there will be a new 8 seater chair from Les Crosets and another new chair to improve the link from Champoussin.
More advanced skiers can practice their mogul skills on the infamous "Swiss Wall" or the gullies below the Mossettes chair. By 2010 there are plans to open up a new black run above Les Crosets (currently accessible off piste).
Crossing the border into France is not a problem for intermediates and above and with a whole area pass you can choose from a wide variety of runs. The centre of Avoriaz can be reached within 25 - 30 mins from the cable car. Morzine and Les Gets are easily accessible.
Champery is ideal for walking holidays. Some walks are themed e.g. local flora and fauna or local farming activities. A number of small restaurants are open at higher altitudes in the summer and can be reached either by car or by walkers. The biking trailscan be accessed via the many lifts that remain open throughout the year.
For ornithologists it is possible to reach the Col de Bretolet, a key migration route in Spring and Autumn.
Apart from walking and cycling, summer acitvities include the fearsome "Via Ferrata" up a 75 degree slope using fixed rungs and ropes, horse riding and bird watching, The courageous of all ages can try the new Adventure Park which includes a 200m zip wire across a gorge. The Palladium Sports Centre has 2 swimming pools and an ice rink, There are natural spa pools at Thermes Parc in the next village and the spa centre is being modernized in autumn 2008. Each year Champéry hosts a classical and jazz music festival in mid summer.
There are 3 supermarkets in the village which stock a reasonable range of goods. The morning trip to the bakers (5 mins) is a must for the croissants and freshly baked local bread.
How to get there
Champéry can easily be reached by plane or train. It will take about 10.5 hours to drive from Calais.
Plane A number of low cost airlines go into Geneva and from there it takes about 90 minutes to drive up to Champéry or take the train (about 2.5 hours). Champéry main station adjoins the cable car and is 10 mins walk from the apartment. There is a smaller rail station 5 minutes walk away. If driving, the exit from Geneva airport onto the motorway is easy and the onward route well signposted. Leave the E62 / A9 at junction 18 and follow signs for Portes du Soleil and Champery. More detailed instructions available from owner.
A cheaper alternative, particularly at peak times may be to fly in Basel. Again, the drive is straight forward although takes a bit longer. Onward travel by train from Basel to Champéry is also possible.
