Pontardawe is nestled in the beautiful Swansea valley and offers a central location for all South Wales visitor attractions and superb walking; climbing, cycling, horse riding, golfing, surfing and adventure sports opportunities, being close to both the Brecon Beacons and the stunning Gower coastline. The National Showcave Centre for Wales; Carreg Cennan Castle; the National Botanic Gardens of Wales; Aberglasney Gardens; St. Fagans Welsh Folk Museum; Waterfall Country; Afan Mountain Biking Centre, Clyne Gardens; Big Pit National Coal Mining Museum, Llangennith Beach ( one of the 8 best surfing spots in the U.K.) are all within easy reach and whatever your interests, our visitors often say, that even two weeks in this beautiful, diverse and richly cultural area, is just not long enough to enjoy it all. Even in winter the magic is still there - you can enjoy deserted beaches and coastline walks with only the waves and seagulls for company. After exhilarating walking you can enjoy seriously good food in the many Swansea restaurants, then home to put your feet up in front of a roaring fire.
The Swansea area
Pontardawe has lots of little shops as well as two supermarkets; several restaurants; a golf course( just over 6100 yards Par 70 with beautiful hilltop views); a swimming pool; gym; leisure centre, its own Theatre and Arts Centre, showing a wonderful variety of live entertainment - all are within a 2 minute drive or 10 - 15 minute walk of the cottage. Ynysmeudwy ('water meadow of the hermit') lies at the foot of the Gurad mountain. You can roam freely on the many public footpaths that wind through the woods or across open farm and moorland on the mountain, with beautiful views down the Swansea Valley. On a clear day, Mumbles Head beckons invitingly from a sparkling sea. The Swansea Canal is a 2 minute walk away and from there you can walk along the canal to Pontardawe - 15 minutes - sometimes spotting the rare and beautiful native Kingfisher. Nearby, the wide River Tawe wends its way down the valley to the sea and here you can picnic and sunbath at various points along the river; also cycle or walk on the easy track, often spotting magestic herons that fish along the river. The track is part of the Sustrans National Cycle Route network and stretches from Ystragynlais, further up the valley all the way (traffic free) to Swansea (16 kms) and from there along the seafront to the Victorian seaside village of Mumbles with its little boutique shops and eateries.

“Truly Five Star Cottage”
A very belated review of our family holiday in August '12. A beautifully restored cottage, spotless and extremely comfortable, we appreciated the attention to detail (including the silk filled duvets!). We had a few days at Rhossili beach (about an hours drive) which is very safe for the children's first experience of body boarding and visited nearby National Trust properties and, on a rainy day, the Swansea LC waterpark. Thank you Fiona for all of the advice and the great welcome including the cake and honey. We were delighted to hear you have been winning more awards for the cottages and the stunning garden - congratulations!

“Beautiful cottage, perfect weekend!”
We booked Craig Cottage for my birthday weekend in March. On arrival I was delighted to find a welcome sign on the door and a beautifully presented cottage which was to be our home for the weekend. As we entered the cottage it was toasty warm with fresh flowers and a bara brith to make us feel welcomed and at home. The cottage is very tastefully decorated with pretty antiques and quirky furniture making it feel very homely, yet interesting, the cottage is also very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. The kitchen, wet room and main bathroom are all modern and beautifully presented. There are French doors leading from the kitchen onto the yard which has a picnic table and pretty flower and herb pots. As we settled in with a glass of wine we were visited by the owner Fiona. She made us feel so welcome and very kindly gave me a birthday card, these little personal touches really were appreciated and made the weekend very memorable. Fiona has a wonderful knowledge of the local and extended areas and gave us some great tips on places to eat and good walks for the dogs. When my parents arrived later in the evening we ordered a Chinese meal from the local take away, it was tasty and good value. During the weekend we enjoyed lovely walks by the canal which is only minutes away from the cottage. We also visited Craig y Nos country park and Caswell Bay, great walks for the dogs and us too! On the Saturday evening we visited The Butchers, delicious food, lovely wine and great atmosphere and only a short taxi ride from the cottage. After a long walk it was lovely to return to the cottage, light the log burner and relax with a glass of wine. I would without reservation recommend the cottages for a weekend break or holiday, I just wish we could have stayed longer! It is also great to find a dog friendly property of such a high standard, the dogs loved their break as much as we did!! The cottages are so special and Fiona's attention to detail really make the cottages unique and a place you want to return to again and again. We are already planning our next visit!
Response: Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to write such a comprehensive and thoughtful review! It was lovely to meet you all and it would be wonderful to welcome you again anytime! Kind regards Fiona

“Fabulously restored cottage. Spotlessly clean and very homely.”
What an absolute gem of a place to stay! We would rank this as one of the highest quality cottages we have been to. Thank you Fiona for the wonderful welcome - all the special finishing touches (welcome flowers on the door, cake, milk, and gorgeous honey) were very much appreciated. As we were busy at our daughters graduation we didn't spend as much time in the cottage or exploring as we would have liked but that gives us a perfect excuse to return! Thank you too Fiona for making Dylan, our dog, so welcome - it's very difficult to find such quality accommodation where we can take him. Altogether a fabulous couple of days - sad to go home.Thank you

“Rescued at difficult time, home away from home.”
Unfortunately our reason for staying at the Nant Cottage wasn't a normal one, my Grandfather was going in for a huge operation in Morriston hospital and my Nan wanted to be close to him, been as we live 1 hour away. We got his operate date a week previous so we were pushed for time to find a hotel/rental. I had been doing some research and loved the look of the cottage, a few bedrooms meant relatives could come and go as needed. I rang Fiona with my issue and she was amazing, she helped us through everything. The cottage was a real saviour for us - even when there wasn't a bed ready for him, we had the cottage. Everything was completely spotless, they have been renovated to the highest standard. We now feel like this is a home away from home. On our next visit hopefully it will be one we can relax and enjoy more which is what the cottage deserves. Thank you Fiona for your help and understanding. We can't wait to return.

“Great place to stay in South Wales”
Thank you Fiona for the really nice and warm welcome. The cottage is so comfortable and warm and well equipped. We had a lovely time thanks to your advice and all the information books you've made. We would love to return someday to see more of Gower and the Brecon Beacons
Response: Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to leave a review. It was such a pleasure to meet your lovely family - we hope you will return to visit Wales sometime. Warm regards, Fiona
The joy of that holiday at Cwmshon Cottage started already during the booking phase. Fiona was always quick and helpful with answers to my many questions. (babybed, babychair, things to do, etc.) We were so much looking forward to the holiday and were more than positively surprised when we finally got there. Beautiful old looking cottage with modern - no luxury - facitilies and a cosy living room with stove and antique interieur. At first glance, you could think the place is a bit "in the middle of nowhere" but actually, it is ideally located between the mountains (15 min drive) and the sea (gower is only 30 min drive - if you do not get lost). Fiona put a lot of effort into an individual folder with information of her favourite places and things to do. Much better than searching through all that leaflets and advertisments. But we got even more information directly from her, which we very much appreciated. It was always a pleasure to chat with her or her husband Andrew.
Summary: we enjoyed our stay VERY much and want to come back soon.
Here a part of my visitors book entry: " There are no words to thank you for your hospitality and the effort you put into this lovely place. You made our stay special and it felt like visiting family."
Response: Thank you so much for your very thoughtful review and kind comments. It was such a pleasure to welcome your dear family and we hope you may want to visit us again some day! Warm regards, Fiona and Andrew

" We had a very enjoyable week staying in your cottage. you have thought of everything to make staying here comfortable and "easy". Your personal recommendations and suggestions for beaches/days out really hit the spot! The Red Kite feeding is something totally spectacular - to see wild birds ( and so many of them ) in such close proximity. Gower and Rhossilli Bay are still as beautiful as I remember them from my childhood. We visited my "roots" in Mountain Ash and climbed the Tumpee .... St Fagans was well worth the whole day we spent there. There is still so much to see and do there - I have a feeling we will be back! Thank you too for the delicious Bara Brith and the honey - truly amazing."

“A wonderful cottage, in a beautiful part of wales”
The cottage was lovely, and perfect for a relaxed weekend. It had excellent facilities, especially the kitchen. We enjoyed a few BBQ's in the garden.
The owner Fiona was very helpful, and always available if we needed any help or advice. The bara brith we received on our arrival was most welcome and tasted wonderful.
The beaches within an hour of the cottage were lovely and peaceful. The people in the village were very friendly, and the produce from the local shops excellent.
We would definitely return, even our 14 year old son enjoyed it, worth fantastic mountain biking nearby.

“Blissful”
All the way from Guernsey, Channel Islands "Team Spotswood" aka Chris and Mich Griffiths and Nicky and Andy Will - arrived in torrential rain, gale force winds etc! but the welcome of this cosy haven more than made up for it. Friday night at the Cwmshon recommended Butchers Arms was really fantastic! Saturday lunch lunch (again a suggestion from Fiona and previous guests) at "Y Polyn", even better (book in advance for this)... all good training and preparation for the 131 mile "Dragon Ride Wales 2012!!". The post ride soak in the massive bath and Welsh steak supper cooked by the support team, aka "the wives" made the last night of our trip complete. A lovely cottage in a great location, close to the Gower and on the doorstep of the Brecon Beacons, highly recommended, especially for any cyclists undertaken the Dragon Ride in future years.

“Delightful, well appointed cottage in a very convenient location.”
The cottage looks just as good in reality as it does on the impressive website. It is without doubt the best holiday cottage that we have ever stayed in. Not only is the accommodation well appointed, it is exceedingly well managed.
The location is perfect for both the Gower and the Beacons. Highlights of the week included walking at Three Cliffs Bay, surfing at Rhossili, archery at Oxwich Bay and mountain biking in Afan Forest Park.
I would have no hesitation in recommending both the cottage and the area to anyone. The location boasts a large range of activities to suit all ages, all weathers and all dispositions.

“Amazing cottage in a lovely area”
After a late arrival on Friday night we were so pleased to find such a lovely clean cottage!
The information packs which Fiona has made up make it so difficult to decide what to do, there is so much choice. It seems the area has something for everyone, be it walkers, couples, families, you will be spoilt for choice. We were there with a 4 year old and 18 month old so with them being a bit young for the walks we were drawn to, we eventually decided on beaches on Saturday and Carreg Cennan Castle and Red Kite Feeding on Sunday. We also took advantage of the small childrens play area less than a minutes walk from the cottage....very handy when dinner took slightly longer than anticipated!
We had a fantastic time, the cottage really felt like home from home. You couldn't wish for a better host in Fiona, she is a font of information and was happy to advise us on where was best to visit and the best routes to get there.
We are very much looking forward to a return visit!
