The West Country region

The Dorset countryside with its rolling hills, small towns and picturesque villages appears to have changed little since Thomas Hardy wrote his classic novels. A short exploration by car or for walkers along marked paths will take you through pretty Purbeck stone or thatched roof villages with cosy traditional pubs and restaurants.

The dramatic Jurassic coastline, now a world heritage site with Old Harry Rocks, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Dor, Chesil Beach and the small fishing ports of Bridport and Lyme Regis (setting of John Fowles 'The French Lieutenant's Woman') are now part of the South West coastal path.

Swanage

Swanage is an unspoilt seaside town combining the best traditional family facilities and entertainment with a growing number of more sophisticated shops, restaurants and pubs, making it an ideal base for exploring the beautiful Dorset countryside and coastline.

Situated on 'The Parade' you are a few paces from the sea, the award-winning sandy beaches and Victorian pier.

Swanage beach provides safe bathing and paddling for even the youngest of children as the sandy beach shelves gently into the sea. All round family entertainment is available in the Mowlem Theatre, Punch and Judy beach shows, pitch and putt, mini-funfair, the arcade and of course the steam train to Corfe Castle!

For water sport enthusiasts Swanage Bay is popular with novices and experts alike. You can sail and windsurf or learn to scuba-dive with approved tuition from the sea schools on the pier. For the less adventurous pleasure cruises depart daily from the pier throughout the season, sailing to Brownsea Island, Bournemouth and the Isle of Wight.

Music and festivals are a feature of Swanage with the Jazz weekend in July, the colourful Regatta, Carnival and Lifeboat weeks in August and in September the Folk Festival.

Just a little further away are more outdoor activities: Riding Stables in Studland and Corfe Castle and Cycle hire near Wareham

For Bird watchers, the RSPB reserve at Arne is nearby.
