Home description
The Malverns was a hotel until the 1980s and is now apartments. It is 250 metres above the old town and pier, away form the crowds and late night noise, but close enough for convenient access. It has a view of Ballard Down and Swanage Bay. This ground floor apartment is newly refurbished but retains the original high ceilings, solid wood floors and stained glass bay window. It is rated three star by Quality in Tourism. There is a reserved parking space at the rear of the building.
The location is ideal for walking as the South Coast Path is 250 metres up the hill. See the view from the park, which is across the bay to Handfast Point and the Pinnacles (see the pictures). The chalk cliffs of the Isle of Wight complete the stunning seascape. It is worth getting up at dawn when nobody is about to have this expanse all to yourself.
The Coast Path leads to Durlston, with its folly of a castle and the rest of the Jurassic coast. Fishing and sailing are equally popular and there is diving for the more adventurous. The steam railway from Swanage offers frequent services to Corfe Castle and there are boat trips from the pier. The town is rich in local history offers a good choice of pubs and restaurants. It has safe, sandy beaches in a sheltered bay. There are art galleries, all sorts of live music and a distinct local character.

The West Country / Dorset region
Dorset is only two hours from London by car and offers everything from the modern urban bustle and night life of Bournemouth and Poole, to villages and countryside that are unchanged since Thomas Hardy wrote his many books in the area. Only Sydney Harbour is larger than Poole, which has sailing, windsurfing, fishing and a bird sanctuary. Taking the Sandbanks ferry across to the Isle of Purbeck takes only 15 minutes, but it takes you back in time too. Parts of the walled Saxon town of Wareham are unchanged since the Vikings sailed up the river. Corfe Castle is still the ruin that Cromwell’s troops left in the Civil War and Swanage still has the feel of a Victorian seaside town.
The Jurassic Coast is a world heritage site and walking the coast path is an excellent way to experience it. The variation in scenery over the relatively short stretch of coast from the RSPB bird sanctuary at Arne on Poole Harbour and the endless dunes at Studland, to the Undercliff at Lyme Regis is quite amazing. The Isle of Purbeck has some of the most striking scenery in the country. Millions of years in its formation, it offers such dramatic and rapidly changing scenery that even those who thought they had no interest in such matters end up studying the explanatory display boards along the coast path. The fossilised remains of dinosaurs that walked these shores so long ago are still found along the coast and there is an exhibit of excellent finds at the Square and Compass. An excellent chance for a drink disguised as an educational endeavour!
Walking, cycling, fishing, horse-riding, diving and sailing are all popular, with abundant wildlife, from dolphins to deer (frequently seen) and numerous unusual birds. The elusive puffins now feature in local advertising, but there are also yellow hammers, stonechats, peregrine falcons and all manner of water fowl and sea birds.
Swanage / Swanage Bay area
The town grew on the export of Purbeck stone from the quarries under much of the old town and over by Acton and Worth Matravers, where you can find The Square and Compass - a great pub with warm beer due to the lack of a cellar. John Mowlem, the son of a quarryman, was responsible for a great deal of street paving and similar works in London. He sent all manner of artefacts back to Swanage, the most impressive of which is the clock tower by the lifeboat station, originally a monument to the Duke of Wellington, which used to stand at the foot of London Bridge until Mowlem’s road improvements left no room for it.
Mowlem’s nephew and successor, George Burt, wanted to make Swanage a popular holiday destination for Londoners. He went further than his uncle and sent down the whole façade of the town hall on the High Street. It dates from 1670 and was the façade of the Mercer’s Hall, in the City of London, but the attribution (on the building) to Sir Christopher Wren is wishful thinking. The architect was actually Edward Jerman and it was brought to Swanage after demolition in 1861. Purbeck House Hotel in the High Street was owned by Burt and is full of London artefacts, starting with an archway from Grosvenor Place in central London and statues from Billingsgate and the Royal Exchange. Burt's biggest monument is the folly, Durlston Castle, which is also surrounded by London memorabilia, including three granite columns, which were surplus to requirements in Trafalgar Square.

There is a double sofa bed in the lounge, with two single duvets, but it is still a one bedroom apartment and is not suitable for children. It sleeps a couple and baby with the option of putting someone on the sofa bed, but this would be cramped if it is more than a brief stay.
Further details outdoors: The apartment has no exterior facilities except the reserved parking space, but the bedroom looks out onto a very pretty garden maintained by a neighbour.

The apartment is lovely and cosy and we enjoyed our stay here. Upton family.
Hi. We stayed at Malvern Apt. in Swanage last week & we thought you would like to know that we was very impressed as we couldn't fault it. It was clean, spacious & comfortable. When we decide to come to Dorset again we would certainly book with you again. We hope that we left it the way that we found it. Swanage is a lovely place and we had a very enjoyable week. Glenys
It has been one of the most memorable holidays for us. Beautiful place... I think the apartment deserves five stars. HP Bournemouth
