The West Country region

There are so many things to do in Dorset – if you are wondering where to go and what to do in Dorset, here are some ideas to help you explore, enjoy and make the most of this county.

The magnificent Dorset coastline, together with the outstanding natural beauty of the unspoilt countryside, makes this county a very special place to come and explore.

Discover the breathtaking Jurassic Coast, England's first natural World Heritage Site, stretching for 95 miles from neighbouring East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset. There is so much to do along this stunning coastline, which is world famous for fossil hunting. There are wonderful views for walkers on the South West Coast Path National Trail, or you can simply enjoy the spectacular scenery on a gentle coastal cruise.

Away from the coast you will find miles and miles of rolling countryside sprinkled with charming villages and fascinating market towns. Almost all of Dorset's countryside is protected and is home to a huge diversity of wildlife in downlands, tranquil river valleys, water meadows, woodlands and colourful heathlands.

Her Majesty The Queen and his Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh visited Dorset on 11 June 2009, why not view their visits to Weymouth beach, Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy and The Tank Museum perhaps explore some of these areas yourself on your visit to Dorset.

It is no wonder that the area has captivated film and TV makers from all over the world. Productions of all kinds have been filmed on location here, with Dorset's unspoilt countryside, dramatic coastline and spectacular historic houses and gardens being used as a backdrop to the action.

The Jurassic Coast is a 95 mile stretch of outstanding geology in between Dorset and East Devon which is now designated as a World Heritage Site.

Well preserved dinosaurs and dinosaur footprints have been found along parts of the coast and West Dorset is a very good area for fossils.

The beaches around Kimmeridge are very popular with fossil hunters and the safest way to find fossils is on the beaches at low tide.

Swanage

Swanage & Purbeck

Durdle Door in Swanage & Purbeck

Swanage & Purbeck lies on the south coast of Dorset and offers stunning coastal and country scenery. Visitors can enjoy the Blue Flag sandy beach at the traditional Victorian resort of Swanage or the more rugged beach at Studland; walking along the South West Coast Path gives breathtaking views over the coastline. The area is also the eastern gateway to the Jurassic Coast – Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are key features of the World Heritage Site.

Durlston Country Park is a perfect place to appreciate the area's rich wildlife as is Wareham Forest, where the Sika Trail offers a safe off-road cycling environment. Purbeck also has a wealth of family attractions including Monkey World and The Tank Museum and was the inspiration for many of Enid Blyton's novels.

Here are some ideas for things not to miss in Swanage & Purbeck:

Swanage Railway

Take a trip on the Swanage Railway and stop off at the iconic Corfe Castle.

Cycle along the Sika Cycle Trail in the heart of Wareham Forest.

Walk along the Victorian Pier at Swanage and take a boat trip along the coast.

Tank Museum

Visit the former home of Lawrence of Arabia, Clouds Hill, and his grave at Moreton Cemetary.

Watch the tank displays at The Tank Museum, the world's largest collection of armoured vehicles.

Take a boat trip to Brownsea Island, home of the rare red squirrel.

Farmer Palmers Farm Park Go to the market in Wareham on the river Frome to sample the local food.

Take the children to Farmer Palmers or Putlake Adventure Farm to get up close with the animals.

Visit Durlston Country Park and watch for dolphins.

Lulworth CastleEnjoy a stroll around the breath taking grounds of Lulworth Castle.

Walk along the South West Coast Path and enjoy the stunning views.

Go fossil hunting at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.

Studland Horse riding.
