But Swanage and its surroundings are also rich in history from Celtic hill forts, Saxon walls, Norman castles to World War II installations. This was also the home of the famous english poet and novelist, Thomas Hardy, and the villages and towns, the hills and heathlands are rich in associations with his writings..

The cottage is available in the summer months on a weekly basis, Saturday to Saturday,. A chief attraction is its location in the very heart of Swanage right on top of the beach, public transport, shops, pubs and restaurants, so you can can easily do without a car, though private parking is available.

The Isle of Purbeck region

Climate is temperate. Best months for visits, birds, flowers, are June through September.

Stone architecture is characteristic. Purbeck has a long tradition of stone-quarrying for house and roof construction.

Our cottages are clad in local Purbeck stone and our garden was a "stone yard" - storage place for stone-shipping near the dock - in the 19c.

Most famous monument nearby is the splendid ruin of Corfe Castle dating from Anglo-saxon times. Wareham has Saxon walls. Maiden Castle and Flower Barrow are fine Iron-age Forts once occupied by numerous Celtic farmers and townsfolk.

Purbeck area is generally considered of outstanding natural beauty. Much of it is National Trust land donated by the feudal Bankes family, who survived Cromwell's assault and destruction of their castle at Corfe and ruled a huge demesne of farm and heathland.

Hardy's birthplace cottage is well worth a visit at Lower Bockhampton near Dorchester (Casterbridge in his novels). Hardy calls Swanage 'Knollsea' in his novels, and lived here briefly when he first got married.

Many picturesque villages: Langton Matravers, Worth Matravers, Acton, Studland, Kimmeridge and Lulworth are within easy reach by bus or on foot. most of them have fine churches and interesting graveyards. The"Square and Compasss" pub at nearby village of Worth Matravers is the most historic in Dorset and has a stone-carving fair, theatricals and a fossil museum for visitors.

Swanage Bay

Durlston Castle - Jurassic Coast exhibition.

Durlston Country Park - ecological and geological exhibits.

Swanage Steam Railway - excursions to Harmon's Cross and Corfe.

Lighthouse and Tilly Whim quarry.

Casino and Funworld Amusement Arcade.

Boat excursions, Fishing, Horse riding, Scuba diving, Rock climbing, golf, tennis, etc.

Swanage Carnival and Regatta and numerous other events such as fetes, fireworks and music festivals in July, August and September

"Convenient Location (mobility impaired), Well Equiped, Excellent."

Our reason for choosing was the location - and we were not disappointed. Ground floor with everything nearby - seafront, shops, restaurants, buses, taxis. End of pier to catch a boat is further, but p… More

A gracious and perceptive commentary! Thanks!

"Relaxing,comfortable,welcoming."

We are so pleased that we chose 5 Arcade Terrace to stay in for our visit to the delightful town of Swanage. The location in the town centre meant that we did not need to use our car for the week and yet it was totally peaceful. The apartment had everything we needed,(and more), the conservatory and secluded garden were lovely and Ian and Jane were perfect hosts, always available but not intrusive. We definitely intend to stay there again.

Dear Brenda: We very much appreciate your kindly review of the cottage, which will help us a lot in future. Thanks again! Jane and Ian

"Location great; decor dated"

We had a really great time in Swanage. The real selling point of this cottage is the location. The communication with the owners was also great. The decor is stuck in the 70's but is very clean and there are additional items that really help e.g. tinfoil, soap, washing powder. We went as a couple and had the downstairs cottage; it has two single beds in the conservatory, which had really drab and sun-bleached covers on. If we had taken our children I would not have let them sleep in there as it is open to the garden and adjacent to the front room, which would prevent them sleeping. Some updating could turn this into a wonderful cottage, particularly of bedlinnen etc as the small garden space is lovely.

Since May 2014 the cottage has been completely redecorated and updated. See below!
