Home description
A very comfortable 2 bedroom cottage which was built in 1990 in the small hamlet of Hameau Tranquille. Re decorated to a high standard in 2005 this cottage has been very popular with our guests, many of whom return year after year. The cottage is laid out all on one level, and is ideal for the less mobile. The beach is fantastic, and the locals are all very friendly.

The Normandy / Manche region
The area is very rural, and flat. The whole Contentin is surrounded on three sides by the English Channel. The area is very beautiful, and has been a favourite area for the British to visit for many decades.
Surtainville area
The cottage was built in 1990, and is in a beautiful location on the West Coast of the Cherbourg Peninsula. The hamlet is set back just 300 metres from the beach. The hamlet is bordered by National Trust land, and is very safe for children. There are plenty of things to do both locally and further afield. Locally, you can experience the village life, where there are markets six days of the week. There are some very good restaurants within 15 kilometres of Hameau Tranquille, which offer a wide variety of cuisine. There are horse riding stables locally, or if you enjoy walking, then there are several beautiful walks, including the coastal walk to Carteret 8 kilometres away. Whether you walk to Carteret, or drive, once there, you can catch a ferry to Jersey for a day trip. Jersey is a wonderful island, which has a mix of both French and British cultures. Along the coast line there are Windsurfing clubs, as well as beach sailing. Further afield, Normandy has about forty golf courses, which are very rarely crowded (golf is not as popular in France as it is in the UK ). Visit the port town of Cherbourg 30 minutes away, most people just drive straight through it after leaving the ferry, but it’s got lots of history, many good shops, cafés, restaurants and two large hypermarkets. Drive over to Caen, visit William the Conqueror’s castle and Abbey’s, see Pegasus bridge, the first place to be liberated on the 6th June 1944. Walk along the D Day landing beaches, and visit the town of Arromanches made famous by the Mulberry harbour. And while you are in the area, don’t forget the Bayeux Tapestry. If you take a trip south you will find the old 8th century Benedictine Abbey at Mont St. Michel, which is a small village built on a granite rock ½ a mile from the mainland in the Bay of St. Michel. A raised causeway links the village to the mainland during low tide. During high tide it is approached via boat. Slightly further on is the town of St. Malo with it’s 14th century castle. If you feel really adventurous, then Paris is only 4 hours away by car, or three hours by train. Don’t forget Disneyland Paris. These are just a few of the places to visit. Whatever you decide to do, we are sure you will have a wonderful holiday.
How to get there
Ferry from either Portsmouth to Cherbourg, Portsmouth to Caen, Portsmouth to Le Harve or Dover to Calais. Cherbourg ferry terminal is only 30 minutes from the cottage.
