The Black Sea Coast region
Sunny Beach is a buzzzing sea side resort with everything a good beach holiday needs. The Bay itself is a very long arched strip of sand, bars, shops, hotels and a full range of beach activities with different character at different places on the strip. Dont believe the 'Vulgaria' tag at all. The quietest and more sedate part of the resort is the northern end by the Majestic Hotel and Helena Hotel where it is calm and very relaxed with a great beach area, beach bars and excellent hotels with lovely pools and pool bars which are open to all. This area is near to Bay View Villas which is set back on the hillside just to the north of Sunny Beach. It is possible to walk the full length of Sunny Beach from north to south via a pedestrianised road. It is quite a way and takes you through a variety of holiday resort activities to suit all ages such as crazy golf, bungee jumping, bars, archery, water sports, quad biking, horse riding etc and many bars and shops selling a variety of wares. Jet skis, banana boats, and para-sailing are available to hire throughout the beach – the operators are open for haggling over the price! Parking is available all over the resort. Please see 'Eating Out' for some favourite restaurants.
The centre strip of Sunny Beach has a signpost distinctive 'catapult' bungee activity by the beach which is also where the main clubs and bars can be found and the bar representatives will be on hand to tempt youngsters and others into bar crawls and club nights. Sure this is an area that attracts revellers - but hey everyone is young once and this is the place to go if you want some fun. This is an exciting, noisy and lively area which comes to life late in the evening and is very popular with young men and women. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants around here offering good value fun including all of the latest sport on tv etc.
The southern end of Sunny Beach provides a more chilled vibe. Cacao Beach is a cool and trendy beach with lounge bars, pools and music. It also has a lovely Gloria Mar sea food restaurant and water sport activities. It is on the road between Sunny Beach and Nessebar (turn left just before the last set of traffic lights at the main roundabout for Nessebar). There is a lovely beach with trendy bars such as Bedroom. The beach turns into a nightclub area in the late evening with well known beach parties and guest sound systems with DJs such as Fat Boy Slim and Armin Van Buuren etc. Tickets can be obtained at Cacao Beach or from Bar reps. Look on the Cacao Beach website for the events.
Bay View Villas itself has lots going on.
Sports Bar & Pool
The Sports Bar is the furthest facility from Kali 4 but is only a one minute walk and serves food and drink during the day. The menu includes salads, chicken, pasta, omelettes, burgers and 'dishes of the day'. There is a baby/children's pool, Jacuzzi, main pool with a swim up bar and pool tables.
Caribbean Bar & Rooftop Restaurant
In the evening the Caribbean Bar is open downstairs and dinner is available from the rooftop restaurant which has fantastic views over the bay of Sunny Beach. Live music is a regular feature.
Spa treatments can be booked at the Monica Spa reception including massage, manicure, pedicure, Turkish bath and various beauty treatments. There is a well equipped air conditioned gym offering a running machine, 2 bikes, elliptical trainer and many weight stations and free weights. Gym prices are very competitive.
There is a regular shuttle service to/from Bay View Villas and Sunny Beach. The timetable is found at reception and is subject to change. This takes just over 5 minutes and costs some 3 lev per person. Children up to 6 years are free of charge. If you wish to go to the resort outside of the shuttle bus service times the driver will take a maximum of 4 persons for 10 lev.
There is a free bus to the Aqua Paradise water park at Nessebar from the main road running through Sunny Beach. Buses to Nessebar and Sveti Vlas (St Vlas) also run from there and cost 1 lev per journey.
There is much to do in the surrounding region and area.
For culture a trip to the very close walled ancient town of Nessebar, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must. Lots to see: boutiques, ruins, markets, churches, many restaurants and cafes, fantastic views and good cheap parking (once you've crossed the bridge turn left and you'll see the main car park). Other parking is available by turning right and after 50 yards turning right again. A nice way to get there is by boat at the jetty on the beach next to the Helena Hotel. It is a short journey. Make sure you remember times of the return journey. If you go by boat when you get off make your way straight up to the terrace via the restaurants overlooking Sunny Beach Bay and you will find yourself in the main area. Turn left and work your way through to the north eastern side for some nice restaurants with views over the sea.
Dinevi Marina, Sveti Vlas
The Marina is an upmarket and stylish marina and promenade with bars and nice restaurants. Slightly more pricey than the rest of Sunny Beach. It is well worth an evening. There is a lovely beach (just walk further on from the pool area below) and cafes during the day. It is on the right 1.5km from Sunny Beach further along from St Vlas.
St Vlas is a lovely and lively village with a central square, many restaurants and bars. It does not have a beach. It is found on the left 1km from the northern end of Sunny Beach. Again nice for an evening meal and visit.
The Garden of Eden
The Garden of Eden is a stylish development of apartments, with a hotel, pools, pool bars, beach and several restaurants in a lovely setting. It is found past St Vlas and the Diveni Marina on the hill on the right. It is set on the hill sweeping down to the beach through a series of lovely terraced gardens and pools. Visitors are welcome. Park at the car park at the top by the hotel and make your way down to the beach or stop at a pool on the way. There is a nice fish restaurant right on the beach and others by the pools. Worth a visit for the day. Taxi fare there and back about 60-80 lev or so.
Aqua Paradise Nessebar – water park
There is another water park closer to the complex in Sunny Beach, but we prefer this one. Clean and well maintained with lots of water rides, bars and restaurants and a children's area. Cashless system - load money on to a wristband and use it to charge food and drink throughout the day. Adults pay 38 lev for the whole day (9.30am – 7.00pm) and 28 lev for late entrance (3.00pm – 7.00pm). Children 0.9m – 1.3m pay 19/14 lev and children under 0.9m go free. It is found on the left on the main road to Burgas Airport from Sunny Beach near Nessebar. You will probably notice it on the right as you drive from the airport to Bay View when you arrive.
10 minutes drive from Bay View Village, Ravda is a small town with an unspoilt beach. Eating and drinking here is very cheap with many self-service restaurants.
Bourgas is an hours drive south from Sunny Beach and is the main town/city in the region and has many large shops and malls on the outskirts as you would expect. It also has a nice beach front with some verdant sea gardens. There is an old town area in the centre which is pretty with boutique shops, museums, a university area and cafes/bars. Buses go from Sunny Beach.
Sozopol is another historic peninsula town this time with Greek origins named after Apollo. It is some 2 hours drive south from Sunny Beach past Bourgas towards Turkey. It is a more bohemian and in some respects more natural version of Nessebar with two beaches and many lovely shops and cafes and food stalls. It is popular with Bulgarians and has a lively feel to it. There are buses and excursions from Sunny Beach and a fast boat (40 mins ) which can be booked at the Nessebar harbour. Look out for the signs.
Eating out has improved dramatically over the last 5 years and the waiters and waitresses speak good English. Bulgarian's are quite reserved in their personalities but usually respond well to a friendly approach, an attempt to use Bulgarian, and a cheery smile. Dining out is very cheap both at Bay View Village and in Sunny Beach. A main course salad is approximately £2.50 (5 lev) and a draught beer about £1 (2 lev). Imported alcohol costs more as ever. An average main course with wine and coffee for 4 people in the resort costs under £40 (80-100 lev), There are places, such as Djannys, where your bill will be even less, and in the café style self service restaurants in villages like Ravda less still! Local beer such as Kamenitza and Zagorka are good as is the local wine, such as Traminer and Pomorie Muscat. In many places on the beaches there are fast-food outlets selling Bulgarian style kebab wraps, hot potatoes, pizza etc. Take care to ensure the mayo and sauces available have not been in the sun too long! Otherwise great value fillers during the beach chill out. We would recommend Djanny's for a great menu and good food and the Condor also.
Some favourite places:-
Majestic Hotel – lovely pools and pool bar right next to the nicest part of Sunny Beach.
Venys Beach – our favourite bar on the beach in front of the Majestic Hotel. Great value cocktails and happy hour. Great loungers at the front overlooking the beach. Cool music.
The Caribby – on the beach moving south towards the busier part of the resort. Specialises in huge skewers of pork and chicken on a wooden board with salad and chips. Live entertainment.
Fiesta Bar – on the beach in front of the Fiesta Hotel next to the Majestic. Light lunches and sport on large screens.
Fast food – in front of the Fiesta Hotel. Jacket potatoes, pizza, burgers, kebabs.
Stella di Mare – on the beach –- white Italian restaurant opposite Victoria Palace Hotel.
The Windmill – on the road to St Vlas on the left - traditional Bulgarian food and walking on hot coals show.
Khan's Tent (Hanska Shatra) - spectacular floor show and traditional cuisine with views across Sunny Beach and Nessebar. Reception will book transport and a table for you. You just pay for your meal but this is more expensive than other restaurants in Sunny Beach. It is a full evening out and one of the must do events.
Djannys Restaurant – in the main part of the resort. Expect to queue. Good food and very cheap. Call ahead to book on 00 359 897 884530.
Condor Restaurant – situated on the main road through Sunny Beach near the Post Office. Very cheap, busy and buzzy in the evening and a favourite with the locals.
Nessebar restaurants – Gloria Mar, Kapitanska, Dionis, Aquagrill, Neptun, Zornitsa and Vega. Neptun offers the best view. Avoid Andromeda (poor view and expensive).
Dinevi Marina, Sveti Vlas – Planet Yacht – trendy multi-level bar/restaurant with cocktails and good food. Also good is Salt & Pepper and Gloria Mar.
