The Black Sea Coast region

Sunny Beach is a beach resort North of Bourgas on the west coast of the Black Sea. It’s based around a long curving strip of high quality beach on a sea that is not tidal. The waves are small and the waters safe for bathing, with a temperature similar to the Mediterranean.

The latitude is the same as the South of France or Rome to give you an idea of the weather. There are on average 1700 hours of sunshine from May through to September with an average daily temperature in summer of 27°C.

The beach itself is a wide semi-circular bay facing east with an over 8 km long beach strip, 30-60 meters wide, fine golden sand, natural dunes, a clean and gently sloping beach gradient into the sea and no dangerous fish. Please see the pictures below.

The nearest airport is Bourgas which is about 25 minutes away.

Walk, bus or taxi.

Sveti Vlas

About 4km around the bay slightly to the north and to the west is Sveti Vlas. This is a smaller tourist village with some designer shops, a smaller beach and a marina. This is a much quieter area than Sunny Beach.

Walk, bus or taxi.

Nesebar

Really nice old town on a small island joined to the mainland by a causeway. It’s about 6 kilometeres away. There are some nice restaurants, bars and lots of shops selling some nice things. More craft and antique oriented stuff is on sale. You can get bits and bobs from the old Soviet Union here.

From an extract and I quote: “Nesebar is one of the oldest towns in Europe, well known with its exotic monuments, the Antiquity, its fascinating architecture of the Middle Ages and the National Revival period. The town is situated on a small rocky peninsula in the North part of the Bourgas bay. In 1956 Nesebar was proclaimed an archaeological and architectural reserve and in 1983 the cultural monuments of the town were included in the list of UNESCO. The area of Nesebar is about 25 ha. It is linked with the new part of the town by a narrow 300 metres long strip. The beach, based in the new part, is 4 km long.”
